For offense it entirely depends on the enviroment, what the objective is. For defense 12 gauge with steel shot, but again it does depend. Is the defense position in my home, out in the woods, urban enviroment? To many variables to consider.

Offense an M-16 (.227). Defense a shotgun; 12 gage.

I choose a .38 for both.
EDIT: Or, a .357 & just change the ammo as required, but certainly rat-shot in the first chamber.

I'd never assault someone, I only fight defensively. I'd go with a Desert Eagle for defense.
