You hear about backward messages in Led Zepplin songs, hidden meanings in Beatles songs etc etc. You never see that with modern music. It's mostly just christians protesting Marilyn Manson or whoever (and thus making them more popular in the process but I digress). Why don't we have this anymore? What happened?

For a few reasons:

We have access to today's pop/rock stars are FAR more easily than we did with the classics of the past. Back in the day, you hadda *wait* to see em on tv or hear an interview. It was like a treat & a big deal. Now all y'gotta do is point & click to their websites for info' & pics.

American Idol put the final nail in the coffin for anything resembling subtlty.

In 2007, few have the attention span for music w/ mystery. Thus, the here today, gone today acts we see daily.

EDIT:

You have to turn to indie music to find anything w/ mystery now. Forget mainstream radio & MTV....
