Or do you believe our government has a responsibility to stand up to the gun manufacterers and actually protect the people of the United States from the weapons they are selling?

Unfortunately there seems to be more laws out there to protect psychos more than potential victims. The psycho in Virginia had a history of stalking women on campus. Why was he not being monitored or locked -up.

Until our government decides to make gun restrictions a bigger priority, then lots more innocent people will suffer the consequences.

It's interesting that other countries like Canada that have the similar access to weapons do not have problems with violence like the US does.

The 2nd ammendment gives each individual the RIGHT to arm themselves. Therefore it can be assumed that each individual also has the RIGHT to protect themselves. I know this is hard for many to comprehend, but the federal govt actually has no right or responsibility to protect an individual. Read the 10th ammendment. Of course if you live in one of those states or locallities where the govt takes away your right to protect yourself with Nazi style gun laws, you are a sitting duck to the law breakers. It can be hard for some people to understand the philosophy behind this part of the federal govt.

How is it the gun manufacturers fault that some looney got his hands on a weapon and shot people? Where is the responsibility of the school in keeping their students safe? or local law enforcement's responsibility to keep illegal guns off the streets? or their responsibility to enforce the local laws in re the sale of guns? Should car manufacturers be responsible for someones death if they were killed by a drunk driver? or just a careless driver?
Do we really want a nanny state where the people have no responsibility, no motivation, and l few rights that offend no one?
Maybe what we should learn is to press governments (local, state, and federal) to ENFORCE laws that already exist. Maybe we should learn to to EXPECT institutions to be proactive for the safety of those who rely on them without worrying too much who will be "offended".
Why do we have to look for other culprits? Why can we not accept that the shooter is solely and wholely responsible for HIS actions????

There's so many guns already out there, and guns don't really wear out. I have a handgun that has sentimental value to me issued during WW2 and a box of cartridges it was issued with. Yes, it fires even with 60 year old rounds. So I don't think even the most aggressive gun control would do very much going forward.

No, that is not good enough. We must take our own responsibilities....you know that gov't will not help unless it is supportive after the fact. Besides...that may not be their job anyhow....with the exception to perhaps make the laws to try to prohibit these things...but it starts at the grassroots level and then the fight begins.

there have been 150 shooting incidents on college and high school campuses in the last 12 years or so...

with several thousands of schools open every day, that means we have one school shooting once every 11 million school days, (and that's only estimating that there are five thousand colleges and high schools in this country, which is a huge understatement)

so i'd say we're not doing half bad.

this shooting brings it all to attention, but mathematically, shootings should probably occur a lot more often if this country is as violent as people seem to think

imagine how many acts of violence occur in many other nations --- a lot more than one in 11 million, i'd think...

I agree that our gun laws need to be changed...but I think the bigger picture is our handling of crime and the criminals, and how we "warehouse" them, "rehabilitate" them, and make them accountable or their actions early on...AND stiffer penalties for those who sell them illegally....
Crime will only continue to get worse, until something is done to reduce the violence in our culture (like movies, TV and music) and starting to educate our kids earlier about behavior that is not acceptable...
We are too tolerant in this country...more people need to get mad enough to DO something, rather than "talk"

No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away from the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away
