They used to hang around a pear tree we had,
and they were always swooping down on the
cat(?), and the dog, too. I don't see them much
anymore. The durn bluejays don't have the grace
of the raptors, who are up there riding the thermals.

Sounds like the Blue Jay has a nest near by, which is trying to protect its nest from predators. Blue Jays are notorious for what you explained and attacking other birds' eggs in nest. They are just as bad as Magpies, Crows, and Ravens.

Perhaps, but woodpeckers are the worst. Stupid creatures always banging away at our houses, waking people up at 5:00 in the morning, making holes in our boards. If they weren't protected species I would have used a Glock on them.
