use the wireless feature...do I need another provider just for the laptop?

No, you want to purchase a wireless router for your DSL connection. You can plug in the desktop computer to the router, and connect your laptop's wireless using the same connection.

Buy a Linksys router. Their documentation has good instructions on how to accomplish all this.

no you only need a wireless router from you desktop and a wireless adapter for your laptop, then you have to set up a network between the two.....it is not a fun process, and also keep in mind that a wireless network works off a 2.4 frequence which is the same as most cordless phones so their will be interference between the two, but they also have phone now that work off of 5.8 frequencies so that would resolve that issue if you choose to go with it.
