I know what you mean when I was reading about everything that happened yesterday I cried. I was wondering why they have metal detectors in high school but not at colleges. They should be at all schools no matter what cause you never know when something like this will happen. And they need to try to find a way to send warnings out to students and faculty a lot faster than they did cause it took them two hours to warn the students about the first event. This is soo sad I was in shock when I heard about this. School should be a place where you can go and learn and not have to be scared or worried that something like this is going to happen. =(

It is a real tragedy. I work at a college and attend one, so I spend 90% of my time at a school. It really shows you that we don't have a sense of security anywhere.
I was talking to some friends the other day about it and it's really crazy. I can remember when Columbine happened and I was in complete shock. When I heard the news about this shooting yesterday it's like I wasn't even surprised by it. I guess that just shows how bad things have gotten in the world. I'm not sure what the solution is, but there needs to be some way to stop all of this. I hate it for my daughters generation, I guess they'll have to go to school in bullet proof vests or something.....

I agree.A moment of silence is needed. It is very sad and heartbreaking to see & hear about someone going on the rampage and killing others that are just innocent.

My opinion is that when someone doesn't like something and wants to take revenge on someone or maybe strike up some controversy, they go out & do something about it. I feel that it's unecessary for someone to kill out of jealousy or just plain old hatred for others.

I'm not sure what we can do as a society, but I think they should ban guns completly.Like that saying goes "Guns don't kill.People do." What is going through people's minds when they harm another human being?

It's sad because if everything had a metal detector, then no one will seem to trust one another.

There's just too much violence in the world & I think there'll always be.I want Peace. But how can we have Peace if everyone kills each other??

I pray for a world without violence. That's my opinion and maybe someday we'll have Peace..I hope so.

It is tragic. Many people die everyday under tragic circumstances also.

There are already many laws against murder and the school policy was no guns on campus. These things have no affect on someone who wishes to commit crimes of this type.

As a society, we need to remove the condemnation about mental illness and offer support instead. If society didn't label mental illness with a scarlet letter, more people would get help.

Government is not the answer to all problems. Govt can commonly make matters worse. Society in general needs to do something and get people help if they see something wrong with an individual.

It was a very sad thing that happened. There is no getting around that. People have been taken away from their families and can never come back.

That said, finding ways to avoid this is a very complex issue. I believe that it first goes to the parents. It all starts with the need to have parents take their job (and yes parenting IS a job) seriously. Children are getting pushed under the carpet of "mom and dad have too much to do so we can't help and guide you with the knowledge that we have aquired, so good luck. Oh, and here is some money to keep you off our hands" THat is not to say that all children are being put through this exact scenario, but kids are being shoved to the side and no real parenting is happening.

On the subject of gun control, taking away guns from people will just lead to the only people having them being the proverbial "bad guys". I like what Penn of Penn and Teller said about it. He said that he thinks everyone should have guns. Not because he thinks guns are good things, but because when the bad guy pulls out his gun, he needs to be worried that even Grandma Mable sitting quietly in the corner could pull out a 9mm and blast him away. Sure it is extreme, but it would make some idiots think about what the repercussions of pulling a gun out and going on a rampage could be.

The thing that I think would most combat this type of problem (sice most poeple can't go back in time and get a good upbringing) would have to be a good system of people caring for other people. "It takes a community" to keep people from doing stupid things like this. When you see people ganging up on somebody, that person may well be the next shooter. Or when you see that lonely guy who always sits by himself, maybe you should take it on yourself to see how they are doing. We can't depend on the state or education systems. They are here to provide a service of teaching, and there is so much bureaucracy and red tape, that it takes them two weeks to scratch their own backside. We are the people, and if we don't start owning up to it, there won't be much of our own humanity left to save from these gun-happy destroyers of life.

I just hope that some good can come from this tragedy, and that these young people did not die for nothing.

the only element you're able to do is pray that they are going to be risk-free. If this sort of massacre can ensue in Blacksburg, then it could ensue everywhere. I graduated from Virginia Tech and it truly is a suitable, quiet place the place the only exhilaration the police ever get is probably breaking up some loud fraternity events (till the freaked inmate escaped final August and shot the deputy and the shelter). i think of it became into in simple terms a whacko who freaked out and started shooting. the sorrowful element to me is that somebody who's so mentally unwell would have the get admission to to weapons and the certainty to be waiting to reload ammunition so without put off and shoot this sort of excellent form of persons singlehandedly. the place is the gun administration?

I know that UVA in charlottesville is having a moment of silence at 2pm today, to coincide with Tech's convocation. I think that all the universities, especially in VA, should do the same.

We need training in collegiality so that students, teachers and administrators provide a support network for students.

We need anger management training so that young people get help in controlling their negative impulses.
