im a sophomore in high school and im terrified to go back to class, there was a bomb threat last month at my school .and now everyone's freaking about the Virginia tech shooting. A lot of my friends are gonna stay home this week. How could the governemnt let so many shootings happen? i mean school is already hellish enough as it is without fearing someone will blow your brains out. i was too young to remember columbine but V-tech has definetly made an impact.

what are they gonna do to make schools safer?

Hon, if this is affecting you too much, then stop watching the news and maybe rent a movie with happy stuff in it. I'm not telling you to slip into denial, but its important to keep a healthy perspective through this stuff.

If you are informed of the overall details, allow yourself to be shocked, sad, even a bit scared, but then think on the good things in your life and move on. Don't let this killer kill any part of your spirit or who you are too. K?

I have a daughter in Highschool and I purposed to only have fun music on while driving there today. I Didn't talk once about the tragedy and I encouraged her to have fun in spite of "testing week."

We need to purpose to overcome in times like this. It is good that you are honost about your fears. This is healthy and usually a good indication that you are going to get through this, be able to go back to school and be just fine.

There is really nothing they can do. People are going to shoot and kill if that's what they want to do. There's almost no stopping them. You could say we need stronger gun laws, but they'll still buy them illegally. We can't get super crazy with every single bomb threat made because it would take up sooo much time and money that the schools and police can't afford. After Columbine our high school got tons of copy cat bomb threats and yeah our school did take a safer approach at it. Before they would ignore it and then after they would bring in police and dogs and stuff. The only way to prevent the crazy people from killing is to just keep on eye on close family and friends. If they show signs of depression, get them help right away.

First of all, the government does not let these shootings happen. Shootings on campuses of schools are a fairly uncommon practice and when one does occur, police is quick to reply. This student had issues and what started off as a domestic dispute turned quickly into a brutal killing spree. To be afraid of situations like that is understandable, but to run and hide is completely stupid. If you think you are being safe by staying home, you are dumb. Traffic accidents kill more people daily than shootings on campuses of schools. The fact that your friends are staying home from school is just an excuse to get of school. They are taking advantage of a horrible situation. High school is not easy, and college is even harder, but living in fear for the rest of your life is not the answer. Though it is a sad reality, schools now have to have plans in case of shootings, but to blame the schools or the government is stupid. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Lastly, only students can promote safer schoolgrounds. Cliques are easily formed in high school, but by being friendly to all people and welcoming to people who are "loners", you can prevent these types of attacks from happening. Sometimes a friendly hello can make someone feel better.

I wish they could make all schools safer, but unfortunately there is always a chance some individuals are going to slip through and create havoc. these are for the most part rare. if we start putting too much security on students, then they will all feel like their in prison instead of school. students must learn to notice any signs of behavior that may give warning and not be afraid to report it. please don't feel threatened by all this as it is a rare instance that this occurs. this could happen anywhere at any time, so live life to the fullest and just stay aware of your surroundings. take care and good luck!!

Think about it. If you talk to your class mates and everyone else, they're feeling the same as you.

Basically what are you going to do to prevent other students bringing guns to school? They have all the sensitive equipment set up and all, but once they make the schools safer, what are you going to do when you leave school?

Living in the states is a double edged sword. Theres the good and the bad, you just have to deal with it.

there's nothing they can do to stop it -- and there was especially nothing they could do to stop it yesterday

take solace in the fact that, despite the fact that there have been 150 shootings in high schools in the last 12 years or so, most are in likely neighborhoods ---
and those 150 occurred over a period of 2160 school days across thousands of schools
so if there are 5,000 schools nationwide (probably a huge understatement) that means that

the chances of a student being on a high school campus when a shooting takes place are about 1 in 10,800,000

and these shootings usually take place in dangerous districts, so if you're not in one of those, your chances are decreased even further...

'They' can't make schools safer.

You have to do it. Promote inclusion, being kind to everybody, tolerance of different people, and so on, and you will find that nobody will make bomb threats or shoot the place up.

When you snub people and leave them friendless and miserable, it builds up anger in them and they take it out on their families or on the place where they've been mistreated.

The 'government' can't do anything about that. It has to start with you.

I can see it all now............schools that will be turned into prisons with searches and testing and bars on the windows. Is this what ya want? Why are you placing blame on the "government" ? There is far too much violence in our music, tv, movies, games, and so called entertainment. It is an environment cause. http://architecture.about.com/od/socialconcerns/a/safeschools.htm
