Virginia Tech is largely responsible for this having become as terrible as it was. The Administration did NOTHING to warn unsuspecting students that they were in potential danger.
Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to prevent some deranged person with malice in mind from committing mayhem, but it might be lessened in some way.

getting metal dectors but then that is not a garuntee. there are no garantees this will not happen again just knowlege of signs that someting is going wrong will help. if this fact is true. They should of did something more about the Bomb threat that recieved prior to the shooting. They are adults that go to the school so there is not much that you can do. They have rights and it is a big campus and you can not check ever room and ever back pack in sight. i dont know what they could do maybe get a warning system out faster too the whole tech like instead of a tornado warning system have a danger in progress warning then all students would be notified and can take the precaution that are needed.

but as a whole there is not much we can do to stop this from ever happing anywhere. if they want guns they will get hem and if we take them away from the law biding citizens then we will have nothing to protect ourselves and all the criminals will have them because they will get hem anyway they want to. So as a whole country stoping this from ever happing it is not possible violence will always be a part of our country.
Maybe to lessen the violence ppl should be nicer to other and use manners more and be more acceptable to other people but this is even asking a bit much because not everyone will do this but if few here and there do it then it might lessen the likely hood it will happen again somewhere.

I recently read up on a article regarding to how easy and convenient it was for people above 18 to obtain a firearm in Virgina was. People without a license were restricted to only one purchase of a firearm a month, while if you had a license you can buy as many as you can. Even out of state residents can go to Virgina and purchase a firearm with a one month waiting period. Unfortunately there is very little screening and restrictions for psychopaths or people who just want a gun for revenge from getting a hold of one.
In order to stop these shootings you've got to make the price of a bullet say $50,000. You can be damn sure there wont be any innocent bystanders if a bullet cost 50 grand. but a more realistic approach, stricken qualifications for a gun. Posters saying 25 to life is not a deterrent. You have to stop the problem right at the source; getting a hold of one. Forget probation periods for guns and stuff, a misuse of a gun should be a ban for life from holding one. make the waiting period for background check a few months longer, get more info on a person before handing them a tool that can kill. Most importantly ask the person applying for a gun license why he/she wants a gun? This one question alone is enough to screen out psychopaths and over raged people out for revenge who cant keep their composure. If possible just ban the sell of guns. Start tracking down those damn gun dealers who find firearms in peoples homes after a robbery, and stop using Mexico as a border line to smuggle weapons and drugs, I could careless about people coming over, but if something from Mexico can come all the way 3,000 miles east to the backyard of my neighborhood, it makes life a little more frightening and violent. And the hell with Iraq, start dealing problems at home, we ain't got no damn time caring about spreading democracy half way around the world.

We can't.

The world has suffered from the violent actions of unstable individuals since the dawn of man. History is filled with similar tales of horror. The unfortunate reality is that these sorts of incidents can and will happen again in the future. Unless we're willing to surrender all liberty for strict controls down to the level of medicating everyone to ensure a set pattern of behavior, this type of tragic event can always happen.

Another thing to consider...look at the number of people in the world and how often events like this truly happen. As powerful of an impact as these moments have, the reality is that they are rare exceptions to the norm.

Arm everybody? Oh, that would have turned out real well. A classroom full of 50 people or so all shooting guns. Who wants to bet there would have been alot more than 33 dead?

Personally, I believe that anybody who suggests that everybody should be armed to the teeth should never be allowed to come near a gun.

Those who say "guns don't kill people, people kill people" may be correct, but how many would have died yesterday if this maniac was running around with a machete instead of guns? Not 33. There are just so many more options to defend yourself without a gun in the picture. You can run away or throw a chair etc.

Nothing can guarantee that, but the press needs to stop glorifying it with as many whackos as there are out there. The killer reportedly left a note in his dorm in which he railed against "rich kids," "debauchery" and "deceitful charlatans" on campus. No doubt all these exist on every campus and the middle one is great reason why schools from kindergarten on need to ENFORCE rules, standards, order and discipline. Uniforms should also be required!!! There is no excuse for what this madman did, but TRASH makes a lot of people very angry, and LIBERALS are the ones who encourage and support it.

We can't really except to now try to make our schools 'bulletproof'...I had suggested sirens like they had in WW2 to alert people to problems, different codes=different problem, but until we get our own house in order in North America, we will have the problems that go with it...starting over from scratch, with decisions based on history, seems to be one of the only ways, because when you have bad apples left in the bunch, problems never get solved as they should ( I know this to be true running a small business..they (and standard policies) ALL have to go or you can NEVER truly start over!!
So, it would be up to the people to REALLY listen, elect the most viable people and start this continent all over again..will it happen...probably not, could it happen, yes, with time and effort..

we can't, unfortunately. as long as there are people out there who would rather kill than actually fix their problems, such things will occur. as to the magnitude of the slaughter, there are several options:

1. gun control: problem with this is that there are already laws in place against murder, and this guy obviously didn't care about that law, so he's not going to care about a law that makes his gun purchase illegal

2. more guns: if one professor, janitor, or even student had a concealed weapon permit and weapon, this slaughter might have ended a lot sooner

3. strength in numbers: people buy into the notion that they just need to go along with an aggressor and they'll be fine; that assumption may be true sometimes, but not always; had several students ganged up on him, he might have been stopped (please don't read that to say that I am criticizing the students; I would've been scared to death too)

just my opinion...

well get new guards. because when the first shooting happen it was two hours before the killing of the 30 innocent people, and neither the police nor the teachers or any of the staff, didn't warn the students, they just send them a e-mail. they shoulda close the school. And now the blood is in their hands for not trying to stop this massacre two hours before.

(R.I.P)
rest in peace students

ps. my brother was going to virginia tech, luckely he didn't go to that school.

Nothing. It will happen again, that is the nature of our world. We've asked this question after Columbine, and after each successive attack such as this.
We need to be more alert. Pay attention to the people around you. Be kind and offer friendship. We may be able to prevent other attacks like this. But unfortunately, one who is determined to commit such acts will succeed, no matter what we do.
