The most recent report I read said a Glock 19 (9mm semi-automatic handgun) and a .22 'Walther' (not a specific model, but presumably also semi-automatic). These are weapons that are fairly small and can be re-loaded with a new magazine fairly quickly. The ammo for them doesn't take up a lot of space, either, even if it's in pre-loaded magazines.

The school had a gun-free policy in place: no one, student, teachers, or security was allowed to have a gun on campus. You can't go much farther than that to prevent such things, short of frisking everyone on campus on a regular basis.

I have been a resident of Chrisitansburg, Virginia for the past 15 years. Christiansburg is 5 minutes away from Blacksburg, and I am furiuos at the insensitivity of your question. He used a glock 9mm pistol, but it was impossible for the college to know of what he was about to do. The police handled the situation as well as they could, when they came it was too late. You should try not to be so critical in such a sensitive time.

I thought it was a simple hand gun like a 9 mm or glock. In that case he probably fired no more than 50 shots which equates to 4 clips which is very easy to hide if you have even a jacket on. You can not blame security, most students do not want security playing babysitter and having a strong visable presence on a college campus. A college campus is just as open as anyother place in the country

Curious... seems to me the school that YOU attended failed in a more important subject than security... SPELLING !! You're spelling indicates a reading level below 6th grade.

We live in a free and open society... are you ASKING to be inconvenienced by bag-searches and metal-detectors to enter EVERY building ? Are you asking to be TAXED for the BILLIONS in payroll alone it would cost to POST armed-guards at buildings ? I'll enjoy bringing the ACLU into THAT case !!

Rumor so far has 2 handguns (a 9mm and a .22). Clips are simple to carry... I could (and have) load at least 250 rounds of 9mm into a simple book-bag !!

Reports said a .22 and a Glock. How is security useless? We live in an open society, so these things are hard to stop, unless you assign a security person to every single student.

1. Glock
2. don't dis the school man, you don't know how you'd react, either.
3. He had it stored in his dorm room. He went back there after the first 2 shootings and stocked up, then hoofed it across campus.

Colleges aren't usually places where one would need a metal detector. One could assume (or used to be able to) a reasonable theory of safety, since the purpose is to learn, not to kill.

Pray for the victims, their families and their loved ones.

The newspapers said that he had two pistols. That means they were automatics. It also said that he had many magazines of cartridges.
Automatics have magazines that hold anywhere from eight or nine to about fifteen cartridges. The empty magazine can be taken out and a pre-loaded one slipped in in a matter of a couple of seconds.

The gunman carried two Glock 9 mm pistols and lots of ammo.
The security guards and students at VT are not allowed to carry guns or other weapons per school policy.

I think he had a 9mm and a 22caliber pistols. The police always assume. They had someone in custody. Obviously they had the wrong person...
