I'd say either the Law of Gravity, which I hope everybody is familiar with, or the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which states that entropy, or disorder, tends to increase. The ketchup got into the carpet all by itself, but it will require a large expenditure of energy to get it out again.

Murphy's Law, which states that if it is possible for something to happen, it will happen eventually. And specifically as applied to ketchup, it will happen on expensive carpet.

This is the definitive answer.
Darn, Catarthur beat me to it. 10 points for him!
