Oh please, as if this is the first school shooting and it certainly won't be the last.
So, do I write it off? No. I accepted the fact awhile ago that anyone or anything at any time or place could kill me. I could slip in the shower, hit my head and die, but it won't stop me from taking showers. I'm more likely to die in an automobile accident anyways. Of course, an accident doesn't usually come out with a movie a few years later. Ah yes, the Virgina Tech Shoot Out, sounds like a block buster to me!
Is it a traumatic and terrible event? Sure, but it's not shocking or suprising and doesn't really effect me in any way whatsoever. It's another one for the statistics and crime studies. Those who are close to the event will obviously feel different and I can understand their pain at this time, but with 6 billion people on this planet, I have no reason to really care about some school shooting. It is a minor blip on the radar of worldly problems.
As for university securty, great, let's ignore the real cause of the problem and hype up the fear and bring on the metal detectors. Of course, anyone could open fire anywhere, at school, church, the grocery store! Oh, nooo! Run for the hills! Let's put metal detectors out of every public place and make half the population police officers! Let's ban guns! Oh wait.

Everyday we are put in situations with any number of unkowns. We aren't even necessarily safe in our own homes as there could be a natural gas explosion, an electrical fire, a drunk driving through your living room, a home invasion, etc. If we live each day fearful of all the bad stuff that could happen, well, what's the point of even living really? As a college student and as a university employee, I can't let yesterday's events affect how I go about my daily routine. But I should also note that yesterday's events are obviously going to cause many colleges and universities to review their disaster plans and update them as necessary. It's their job to worry about the 'what ifs', not mine...I have my own job to do.

The University of Florida did a great job of making its students feel safe. This morning in the student paper there were articles about safety on campus, official reviews of crisis plans in place and details about the school and local police department including hospital trauma center information and the fact that UF has one of the largest university police forces in the United States.
They didn't leave us wondering if we were safe or not they explained measures in place and addressed the issue immediately. A+

I was in college in the DC area during the sniper shootings. During that time i was spooked a bit and others were too know that this nut could strike at any time. Really after it all and with this tragedy you have to really just move on from this. It is such a random act that you cant walk around looking over your shoulder all the time. Really it is more dangerous driving on the highway everyday than having a crazed gunman shooting up the place.

I'd like to think all colleges and universities will be reviewing their security plans at this point

If everyone would treat everyone else with respect and not alienate people, we wouldn't have these ticking time bombs at school.
As for making me feel, relieved it isn't my school. But who knows, we could be next. So again I will make sure to be nice to everyone I meet because who knows if they will be your undoing.
