The human genome project has really opened a lot of possibilities. I think that identification of DNA strands that predispose someone for catastrophic disease would be a more useful manipulation of nature than making sure "It's a Boy". Some things should be left to natural selection, and I believe that a child's gender is one of them. Aside from the obvious religious point of view that it should be God's determination and not man's, how would you feel if you could look back and find out that had you selected "Girl" instead of "Boy" that a cure for Alzheimer's would have been found or other culture changing advances made. Let's try to eradicate juvenile diabetes, mental retardation, cancer and other plagues on humanity before we worry about the baby having a pee pee!

I dont know. I personally would consider it because I would totally be lost with a baby girl, but I kinda would like to have a boy. I base this on my idea that I would make a better, more compatible parent to a boy than to a girl. HOWEVER....look at all the problems they have in China now, where they value only male children and girls often end up abandoned. They estimate something like 30 million men will have no mates in China by 2020. By allowing people to choose gender based on cultural trends, we could end up with huge social issues like China is sure to face. So its a tough question. Just because we CAN do it, doesnt mean we should.

well, let's say you have one child, a boy, and you want another, a girl, and you don't want to leave it to random selection by the baby gods, if you have the option to choose gender, you would most likely do it ...right?

on the other hand, there are those who believe that only the baby gods get to choose for you and leave it at that. they take what they get and either complain or are happy.

i for one, think that having options is ALWAYS the way to go...and the more the better!

I think we are going down some paths we shouldn't. Look around at some of the brilliant choices people have made thus far, do you really think we should start letting them custom design their kids? Sounds a lot like Frankenstein.

Not. It starts the slippery slope of creating a culture of gene choosing. Scientists think that if we go down this slope, we'll actually create a species sexually incompatible with "natural" humans.

If having a specific gender is worth the thousands of dollars it will cost you to so, I say why not?

I have no problem with it. But then, I tend not to agree with the aphorism "just because science can do something doesn't mean that it /should/."
