I agree with the others - this is going to depend on which fish species they are.

You could fit a lot more damsels at 3" than you could 12" tangs. Different species have different activity levels so highly active fish need more space than slower ones, and some species that look similar (same color and/or body shape) may see each other as rivals and be territorial. Some species do well in schools, others are okay if you have a mated pair, others have to be kept singly. The type of filtration you have, and whether or not you plan to keep invertebrates will also determine your final number. If you're going for a fish-only tank, live rock is not absolutely necessary, but it will help your biological filtration. You'll need to provide more information on types of fish you're interested in for anyone on the forum to answer the question adequately.

that all depends on what else you have and the filtration you are going to use. Salt water doesn't work like fresh water since more fish can live in less water, if the water is circulated properly. Protein skimmer would be a must.

the main factor here would be, live rock how much? (This is for water displacement) corals? (Remember these are animals as well) inverts, if any,

I have a 250 reef tank with more than 200 corals and 32 fish, not to mention all the other little things going on in the tank.

It really will depend on how the tank is set up, what kind of fish, what size fish what other animals you have how well your filtration clears and power of your skimmer to rid the tank of dissolved organics.

I have a 75gal Reef tank (REEF meaning you have live rock and LIVE CORALS)
I have 4 fish in it
1-Powder Blue Tang
1-Yellow Tang
1-Tomato Clown
1-Mandarin Dragonet
I am planning on getting 1 more Dragonet for a mate and I think that's about all this tank can handle.
I have about 15 corals, (Polyps, Leathers, LPS and SPS)
