"When in doubt, make a fool of yourself.
There is a microscopically thin line between
being brilliantly creative and acting like
the most gigantic idiot on earth.
So what the hell, leap!"

I generally don't like comparisons of this kind.

For one, there are just too many exceptions to make it true: I know very, very creative people who are also quite reserved, wear suits every day, and NEVER make fools of themselves. This means that either this line is not so thin as you would make it seem, or I have no idea what creativity is.

The other big problem is targetting. Everybody knows how to act like a fool, but many people have trouble being really creative. Some, upon hearing your saying, may decide that all they have to do to be creative, then, is to act like a fool. And a lot of the time, this just turns out as the opposite of the above example I cited: an idiot who behaves foolishly but is never particularly creative or even interesting.

I'll grant you that there is SOME substance to the quote. A person who is heavily concerned what other people think isn't likely to be creative - he's too busy conforming to step outside the box. But this is at best a rule of thumb... and probably better stated as the negative of what you said. All in all, I think this saying says more or less the same thing but more accurately:

"If you keep going in the same direction, you are likely to end up where you are headed."

Leaping can be good if one 'looks' a wee bit first. I'm the cautious type though.

Words "I" live by...You can't stop your thoughts, but you don't have to follow them. Unnecessary suffering comes from allowing thoughts to ramify into drama.
