When 9/11 occured, people burned mosques and beat up people of Indian descent because they were wearing turbans. Do you think that any members of the community will stupidly lash out at random people of Asian descent now that the V Tech killer has been identified as Korean?

Guys, I understand that it's idiotic to lash out at a group because of the actions of one. Unfortunately it appears to happen a lot in this country.

mmmkay... well being south korean myself definately brings up the jokes haha

but seriously
there's a ton of "white people" who do crap like this, and murder, and rape, and a whole bunch of other stuff, you don't see hate crimes that turn against white people do you? it's still the whole racial discrimination thing all over again, even if we don't see it that way it definately is.

He was brought here from South Korea when he was very young, so really he is as American as anyone else. I certainly hope this does not cause some people to blame Asians for this. He was having problems with depression; a condition that affects many of us regardless of race. I know that you don't feel there is any connection, but I fear that some people might think there is. What I don't understand is why there was no call for a complete campus lock down. There was a two hour delay after the first shooting. Students should have been warned far earlier. Someone's head will roll because of this.

Because he was South Korean. He was not a native-born American. Being in the U.S. since the age of 8, 18, or 80 does not change the fact that he was born in South Korea. The professor that was killed trying to save his students was Israeli. He is not classified as an American, although he has been a professor here for some years. And, remember, this is the media doing this. They are not noted for their brains, only for the speed at which they can send in slanted news reports. Virginia Tech officials did not "classify" him as a South Korean, just as a "troubled" student.

I hope not, it appears this could have been stopped, he had started a fire, he was stalking women, the teacher knew of his writings,,problem is we have had movies shown in national theatres that are NOT HEALTHY movies to see, some of the things he mentioned in his OWN writings, were simply things like stephen king, writers of elm street, freddy kruger, jason, texas chainsaw massacre, ETC<<<< this helps teach a society good things doesnt it ?? It was hard for the teacher to tell if it was creative horror, or the truth of what was always in his mind. Having horror flicks in the nation doesnt help people not to think and imagine evil things. We are NOT supposed to think about such things, and meditate on good things,,what garbage goes in,,,,oftentimes comes out. I would say his silence and lack of any social willingness would have concerned me, also the name issues, and issues he had,,,not to mention that mental health drugs can cause more mental health issues, has sent many over the edge that were simply testing the medications for the pharmaceutical companies..this is a possibility.

No comment on the saudi mosques.

Stop racial discrimination. I'm an Asian and it's not fair. Some americans started so many bad things for ages now, but still, they are being respected and being supported in many ways and some does not serve as good role models. So, why just a single person destroy the entire korean community, and worse, the entire Asian race?

Nobody's perfect.

This makes no sense and is a stupid question..

The second worst massacre in USA history was commited by an American Jew.. no one has ever considered lashing out at jews for this.. and no one ever did..

WHY by the same logic.. now that his mantle as America's worst.. is now taken by a South Korean.. would this suddenly play as a factor??

Perhaps we are seeing through the responses by top contributors here no less.. suggesting boycotts and other punishments against all South koreans.. as a solution.. that YOU ARE THE RACIST AND PART OF THE PROBLEM!!

The truth is this.. wether the gunman is asian, black, blue or even purple.. he is AMERICAN.. he bought his guns because AMERICAN LAWS MAKE IT EASY.. he simply walked in and bought two handguns.. which are illegal in most countries on this planet.. then went on to commit this massacre with them.. simple! he could have been any one.. anyone who has lost hope, anyone who has had a bad run.. because guns are so easy to obtain!!

There's probably a thousand other wackos in American society right now as we speak with the same thoughts as this bloke.. and with the coutry awash with weapons.. its just a sad question of: "when and where will the next one occur?" oh.. and the kids who did Columbine.. WERE WHITE.. just thought I'd add that in... and the guy who blew up Oklahoma Towers.. he was WHITE TOO... he killed hundreds.. included hundreds of children in day care..

Keep that in mind before you bring race into it next time..

Gosh I hope not-but sadly yes it will probably bring hate crimes against Koreans and any other asian countries. I don't understand hate crimes all it does is bring more pain to the community as a whole. Why blame an entire race for ONE persons stupidty? One will never know.

I too, feel that it is a big possibility. People seem to use ANY reason to incite violence. I also believe they would be way out of line.
Crime comes from all different races, religions, and lack of moral standards. It is not conducive to just one culture.

It would be like having a brown haired person robbing someone, and then everyone beating up every brown haired person they see. That is so ridiculous.
There is already way too many senseless killings.
I'm not a religious fanatic, but the bible says we will be our own undoing, and the way we are going, It is a very REAL possibility.

I certainly hope not. It may though in certain areas. I think that sometimes people are just mean anyway and just use situations like this as an excuse to do something horrible. I never understood why anyone believes that they have a right to hurt or kill someone who has done nothing to them just because they are different. I do believe that in one way or another every person pays the price for their wrong doing, and not by the hand of another person.

No, I don't believe so. I think we all see that the stereotype of mass murders being caucasian males is false. It has crossed all races.

We have a problem in the US (and the world) with violence and uncontrollable rage. We have to address it on all levels and stop worrying about the race of the victims or assailants.

It's not OK when young, African-American males are shooting each other. It's not OK when a betrayed suburban wife kills her cheating husband. It's not OK when a rural gunman kills a roomful of Amish school children. And it's not OK when a young, Korean student kills 33 people on campus. It's all equally horrible! We need to be outraged at all of it!!!!!

I hope not, because this is not about the race. There are always someone like this guy in any other countries. He was just happened to be a Korean, but it didn't mean that all Koreans were bad. We shouldn't rush to the conclusion just because there is nothing else better to think about.
