Yes e-bay is safe as long as you do it right. They have a lot of do's & don'ts but they are there for your protection. Try the "new to selling" in the community area or the Q&A - there are people there all the time and will help you out.

eBay (Company) is legit. HOWEVER there are untold numbers of con-artists and criminals waiting to 'suck in' the unaware ... a bit like anything in life.
If you are selling - try to avoid selling 'high ticket' items (not that anyone will want to buy from someone with a low feedback rating), don't accept bids from non-UK registered (or low feedback) bidders and make sure you process payment before shipping. Never accept 'offers' received from random unknown people trying to con you into dealing outside eBay. If the item is worth more than £10 or £20, only send by Registered Post.
NEVER EVER click on ANY 'link' you receive by email (it may LOOK like a legit eBay message, but you will be taken to a 'clone', site where your log-in details will be stolen)

Inherit it from a relative or win the lottery. Even things that are illegal to do, robbery, selling drugs, etc require you to do something. Ebay is relatively safe. My partner buys and sells things there, but doesn't make a lot of money doing. Not enought o survive at least. You would have to do a big volume to make a living at it which is a job in itself.

Ebay is safe as long as you don't open up e-mails from crooks pretending to be from ebay or paypal wanting sensitive info. They will never ask you for this. Be sure that you go to these sites from your browser instead of through phishing sites!
