Of course it did. And all the weapons we poured into Afghanistan because we hated the Soviets did the same. And all the weapons that we are currently selling to many corrupt and brutal regimes are also having that effect. The US will sell arms to anybody if the government believes there is some short term political gain to be had, and the long term effects are ignored, as well as the morality of the governments we are selling to. The arms makers would be happy to sell arms to the devil himself if they could make a profit.
Having said that, the same is true for arms merchants all over the world.

Well, It was necessary to Keep Iran at bay at that time. Hanging him for having and using the weapons we gave him..depends upon your point of view.
There were Many issues that exacerbated hotilities in the region.
Arming Iran Contras (Reagan)
Overt Siding with Israel (ALL)
Stationing Troops in Muslim holy lands in Saudi Arabia - Bush I, (Clinton-Added Troops)
Carter - Armed and Trained Afghan forces (including Osama) to combat Russian Forces.
Bush II Invasion of Iraq
Bush Calling Olmert a "Just and Peacful man" after he Attacked Palestine didn't help either

YES. Of course. And I agree with the first poster. Selling weapons to both sides makes it twice as bad.
We also supplied weapons to the Muhajadeen, predecessors to the Taliban.

i for one do not...saddam was sold those weapons to help us defeat iran during the iran/iraq war, which we did...iran was the bigger threat at that time and after the war, hussein used the excess to control, intimidate, and murder his own people as well as using them to invade kuwait. my point is, up until 9/11, there WAS no terror threat because we either didnt realize it, or it was ignored for other reasons.

And their continuation of weapons sells. According to Kavkaz Center article : "Russians Eager To Sell WMD To Al Quaeda To Attack US " , "As is known, the Russian mafia has close ties with and is tightly controlled by Russian state terrorism agencies such as the FSB or the GRU through family links and widespread corruption in the bandit state of Russia. The FSB and the GRU both have easy access to Russian WMD's. "
It is estimated that Saddam had amassed 100 million tons of munitions - roughly 60 percent of the entire U.S. arsenal. The origins of these weapons were Russian, Chinese and French in declining order of magnitude. The Ukrainians were eager to provide the United States with documents from their own archives on Soviet arms transfers to Iraq and on ongoing Russian assistance to Saddam, to thank America for its help in securing Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union.
Why??... she says it best..
"I tell you now, and I will not tell you again. This is the last time you will receive this counsel.
"As in the past Lenin, as in the past Stalin, and Khrushchev; and many others had tried to deceive the United States. They all felt that by trying to ensnare you with delusions of casting aside their communistic aspirations, that they had become as you, a free nation for all.
"I assure you, My children, there is no freedom in Russia. It is all a delusion.
"They seek the monies of the world from the nations of the world. And why do you not learn a lesson? It happened in the time of Lenin; it happened in the time of Stalin. And there you are all on the same road, ready to give billions of monies that should be given to those of your nation and the free nations of the world.
"Do not be deceived, My children, Russia is not free. It is a cosmetic act to delude you. Lenin and Stalin used the same tactics, My children. Why do you not learn from your errors?" ...
"That is the same old plan, My children, and those leaders of your nation are as blind as they were in the past. I tell you for your own good, My children of the United States of America, that once was a nation under God and indivisible, that you will fall! If you do not come out of your slumber now, you will fall!
"For it is their plan to subdue you, once they get the billions that they need in aid, to bring up the economy and buy more armaments. They have not disposed of their armaments, My child and My children. They store them in other nations. They have the same goals as their forefathers." - Our Lady of the Roses, June 18, 1992
