Question is aimed at UK people but I'm interested in anybody's response - although I think you Americans will find the question a bit absurd....
And it has to be a working, functioning, deadly gun please, seen in real life at close quarters, and obviously not held by police or armed forces... I hope you know what I'm getting at. Please no air rifles, replicas, or an uzi held by a police officer at Buckingham Palace etc. I hope you agree that would be a meaningless survey...
Please give me your country in your answer....

UK. No i've got to say i've NEVER seen a gun, not in this country anyway. Could you imagine if all the stabbings in the country turned into shootings?? To be honest i don't see why any type of gun should be legal to own? What's the point? Knives are legal(ish) and look at the trouble there....

I live in Houston Texas.
I own hand gun and rifle my other coworker have guns one of the has a semi AR15 assault rifle and you can buy them in the sporting good store. There a gun range near my house and some of the folks got a .50 cal sniper rifle it cost 5000 dollar
and the bullets are 5 inch tall and kind kill a person or deer at 1.5 miles away. I even go to some gun store and all they sell are guns and the stuff they sell will blow your mind!
One store hade a sell for the ultimate sniper rifle for 2500 dollar
I'm thinking why?
Oh by the way here you can get the conceived gun license which means you can carry a gun with you!
It pretty interesting here the crime rate is average but on the news you here the criminals get shot and kill by shop owners.
I guest it all about were you live and your up bringing.
PS
There more gun dealers then McDonalds in Texas!
I do love it here ;-)

England. Yes I have used a .303 rifle on the shooting range at Altcar when I was a Cadet in 1953.
Since then I have not seen a revolver or rifle apart from those being held by police or armed service personnel.

Yes, my brother in law and sister were members of a gun club years ago before the dunblane tragedy. They had to be checked by the police and have a safe in their house which also had to be checked by the police. After Dunblane they got rid of them. I'm from the uk.

UK.
I have fired a burst of blanks from a 7.62mm GPMG; fired a .22 calibre target rifle; seen and held a friend's father's double-barreled shotgun; and held and examined an AK47 at an Army display.
One of my friend's fathers owned a Lee-Enfield rifle which I used to play with, but I think the firing pin had been removed.

I am from the Uk
Have been shooting in the country many times in my late teens - double barrel shotguns. Usually with the posh land rover driving chaps in the countryside. (No multi-round pump action styles are allowed) and done a bit of rifle range shooting.
I know what a firearm is and respect it as it is designed to kill.
But we dont love our guns - we cant buy assault rifles and pretty much anything the army uses over the counter. But having as much firepower as you want is in the constitution so it must be right (sarcasm)

England. Yes, of course I have owned handguns until the government made us give them up. I own a shotgun legally, as I live in the country. As a member of the army I used to have my own personal sidearm ,as I was required to carry one at times, when off duty. I grew up around guns. I know what you are getting at, some people have never seen a gun let alone fired one or had one fired at them . I have, and have the scar still. I have used hand guns in combat too, as well as rifles.

My husband and I own 3 handguns ( a 22, 9mm, and a 38). We are in the process of getting a rifle at the moment. My parents own about 8 guns (handguns and rifles). We live in the U.S. in Arkansas. Allot of people around here rely on hunting for food.
