Because the Declaration of Independence and later our Constitution were greatly influenced by two philosophers of the Period of Enlightenment, namely, the English philosopher John Locke and the French philosopher Rousseau.

There were many ideas expressed in the American Revolution that are also ideals of the Enlightenment. Much of the Decleration of Independence and the Bill of Rights combines ideas from the Enlightenment such as freedom of religion and the ability of a country to choose its own leaders to create a new form of goverement.
