i would have to say Stephen King, because, he takes your deepest childhood fears, and brings them to life. And, then, he makes them real enough to make you want to turn on all the lights and lock all the doors. I Love his books.

When I was in college I read Salem's Lot. I lived alone in my own apartment on the first floor with a bedroom window that looked out over a dark alley and my window well. The book scared me so badly I couldn't go to sleep without the lights on in my bedroom. I have never known an author to take a subject like vampirism and make it so evil, so scarey and so incredibly seductive all at once.

I love the contemporary/cultural elements King brings into his novels that revolve around the generation in which he grew up. This helps me to relate to his stories. I love the personas he gives to dogs and cars and little girls with powers who can start fires (Cujo, Christine, Fire Starter.)

I will confess that as King's popularity grew over the decades I have read less of his work because either I have grown so accustomed to his style that he either seems formulaic to me or, he has actually become perceptibly formulaic. Having said that, I've never ever read a book that scared me and thrilled me like Salem's Lot. I also loved The Stand and the journey the characters took together.

In my experience none of the authors you mention come close to King. Certainly not Danielle or Sparks, both of whom are in a whole different class (or in Danielle's case, lack of class) than King. I've read Koontz, and even a book he co-wrote with King, and it just doesn't do it for me like the best of King. I am not familiar with K. Stone so I can't help with that one.

So, it's King, in a landslide.

It seems like you are comparing apples to oranges here. Authors like Danielle Steel write books that have a formula - almost every book is the same just different details. I'm not familiar with Katherine Stone - another romance novelist? I've read Nicholas Sparks and I think he is good at developing female characters and can write beautiful descriptions. I've read a lot of Dean Koontz. He is a good sci-fi/horror writer. He is good at coming up with a cool twist.
Stephen King is in a totally different league. He writes with a depth that is rarely achieved by modern authors in his genre. His characters are well developed and identifiable. He has the ability to tap into the reader's inner fears and childhood dreads. His stories are amazing. I think he is under-appreciated in his own time and is often lumped into the company of authors who churn out formulaic sci-fi and horror.

Stephen King, with Dean Koontz at a close second. They have great writing skill and I can't put their books down. The rest, I can give or take.

Steven King without a doubt!

I've read all of his books (with the exception of the Dark Towers series... they are just too far fetched for me)

I recently read his 2 newest novels, "The Cell" and "Lisey's Story"... and they were great! Especially "The Cell"... I finished it in 2 days... couldn't put it down. That's what he does... brings you in and doesn't let you go till the end!

Second would be Dean Koontz. He also has a great style, just not on the same level as Steven King.

Dean Koontz, without a doubt. The books are thrilling, fast paced, easy to read and always leave me with a chill.

I've read a few of S.King, but find some passages too descriptive and I loose the flow.

One books of D. Steel is enough to last a life time. Once you've read one, you don't need to read any more because they are always the same storyline but with different characters.
