It sounds like some of your usb drivers are missing, the rescue disk obviously didnt come with them on. You could try installing the software that came with the usb divice if you dont have it look on the internet, there is sure to be some drivers for your pc...
Sorry i cant be of more help, you really need to tell people your operating system!!
Good luck!!!

Not sure how much rescuing you had to do, but if you re-installed your pc from scratch, you probably did not re-install the bios drivers for the motherboard. If you did not do a full re-install you probably corrupted the Windows USB drivers.
Unfortunately checking those things will require a little more help from someone experienced.

when you reinstalled (or rescued)your system your drivers for your usb device would of been deleted
drivers are what makes windows understand each peice of software, and also makes them work
so you need to find the disk that came with your wireless usb device and basically reinstall them
this will re-initialize your usb device and it should run fine
wireless networks are pretty difficult to understand even sometimes for a advanced user like myself but this should be pretty straight forward
usb drivers are installed by windows during installation, its only when you are using older operating systems like windows 98/me that you require u.s.b drivers, but xp dosent require drivers for usb devices(unless otherwise stated)
note:if you have problems locating the usb device driver then let me know with the device name and model number and i will look for it for you
good luck

If your hub used to work and you re-installed Windows XP, try going to Microsoft web site and installing the SP2 (service pack 2) - it contains USB2.0 drivers and will probably help.
If the light on the "external USB hub" is no longer lit, it could be that your power supply gave up. You could ask a friend with a volt meter to check to see if it is working.

Unplug the adaptor and plug it back in. You should here a low tone and a high tone when XP recognises it. XP should then start wibbling away and will eventually as for a driver disk for the "unkown USB device".

my guess would be that since you reinstalled your operating system, you need usb drivers. you can do a search on google for your brand of usb adaptor. it should be free. good luck!
