She opened your gifts? like your baby gifts? That would be rude, but she might have thought she was helping. Since you hadn't done it yet and you were about to bring home a new baby, she wanted to help you out. I would let this one go.

It may be percieved as rude, but 'I'd bet that she was trying to help. I guess it would depend upon if she just opened the gifts to snoop or opened the gifts to wash & put them away so that everything was ready to go for mom/dad. Maybe she should have asked, but that's beside the point now.
Sometimes grandparents come off as pushy when they're just trying to help. They're excited about the new grandchild and want to make life as easy as possible for the new parents. The best thing to do is to sit down and talk everything out. After all, a baby coming along changes everything, even a person's relationship with their inlaws/parents. Calm communication is key!
Have a good day!

Maybe MIL thought she was helping by opening the gifts so that they'd be ready when the baby came home? I'd say this:
If she opened the gifts and left them out with the paper scattered all around - way rude!
However, if she opened the gifts, made a list of the contents and givers, removed the tags and cleaned them, put the gifts away in the nursery and then threw away/recycled the wrapping paper - she was trying to be thoughtful and help out.

VERY rude. The gifts were for MTB and baby, NOT anyone else. Is she going to open their Christmas or Birthday gifts too?
At the very least, she should have asked MTB if she had an objection to MiL opening or would she want to wait until she came home.

It sounds extremely rude to me, but were there any circumstances which would lead her to believe the mtb would want her to do this? Why were they not already opened? Whatever her reason, unless she was specifically asked to do so, this was majorly stepping out of line. That is one of the fun parts of having a baby-opening all the adorable baby gifts and preparing for the baby. I would just try to focus on the important thing here though-the new baby. Don't let this ruin your special time with your newborn. They grow sooo fast!

Way rude. My mother in law took it upon herself to rearrange my whole apartment while I was in the hospital. My husband helped her but it was only because he wasn't used to having his mom and wife in the same place and didn't know how to react. But yeah that is very rude, and it shows no class at all. I would definately be a little pissed off when I got home

That is extremely rude! My husband has had to deal with insane in--law behavior but this is off the mark. The Mother in-law needs to apologize and respect the family!

When I was in labor I hated everyone and everything. If anyone would have opened my presents I would have bit their head off! I was so cranky that I made my mom cry. She kept touching my feet eventhough she knows I hate my feet being touched. She kept saying " you're still my baby I can do what I want". I was under the influence of medication and don't remember what I said to her but she cried and did'nt touch my feet anymore. I guess it worked. If I worked that hard to deliver my baby and found out someone had done that I would have lost it!
