You cannot, absolutely cannot, change another person. You can only change yourself and the way you react to them.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can
and the WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!

Not futile but difficult.
You are born, educated, and socialized. Each step is a change in you development as a person. As you grow older maturity will change you too.
What you want to know is whether I can change you. It is possible. I have done it before, but; it takes work and when I a done you could easily change on your own.
Is that futility? No.
It is just time moving on. In the whole of things I changed you and if people paid attention then it had an effect.
But, be careful. Just like horses can be gentled, they can also break your neck.
Changing people opens yourself up for hardship and emotional pain. Don't go into such a change without realizing it will hurt. It is a lot like bull fighting. You can poke and prod the bull for a long time and try and wear him out, but; in the end , he may surprise you and gore you in the end. Let's face it, timing is everything, and abscent your cape it is just you and the bull, and he has two horns to yur one sword.
People can hurt you with what they do and what they say, and what they don't do and don't say.
It is not easy to change a person but I know it can be done and in all likelihood, they will change you too. Like diamonds we are shaped by our own dust. Meaning those we let close to us define us in time.

Yes! A total waste of energy. Let them be how they are, or let them change because they sincerely want to change.
