African Safari Papers by Robert Sedlack.
My boyfriend suggested it to me and I thought it was going to be different but I loved the book and so did the others that I suggested it to.

If you like sci-fi/fantasy, you could try reading "Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment" , and there is a sequel too, called "School's Out Forever", and there is actually a third book coming out next month called "Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports". All three are by James Patterson.
If you like memoirs, "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio" by Terry Ryan is a very good book. We just got done reading it in English. It's about Evelyn Ryan (Terry's mother), a woman living in Defiance, OH during the 1950s and 60s (the contesting era). She has an alcoholic husband and ten children, and she supports them all with the prizes she wins from writing poems, jingles, limericks, and 25-words-or-less contest entries.
Another good book is called "Dance of the Assassins" by Herve Jubert. I'm reading it right now-it's very good. It's a fantasy mystery about Jack the Ripper, and how he is brought back to life. There is a sequel called "The Devil's Tango".

For what age group?
If for teens, this is what I've read and enjoyed:
Tithe by Holly Black (great dark fantasy)
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (I love the whole book. I can't figure out why though. It's just great.)
A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks (Great, sad book. One of my favorites, much better than the movie.)
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld (It started off good, got a little boring, but I really liked the ending and can't wait to read the next book.)
Twilight by Stephenie Meyers (Great vampire love story. It's very addicting. You may have already read it, as it's extremely popular)
Hopefully this can help you in some way.

I really enjoy anything by Sherman Alexie or Louise Erdrich, from a native perspective. I also love fantasy like Alice Hoffman (Practical Magic) and Shannon Hale (The Goose Girl). I've also recently read all of the Brian books by Gary Paulsen. Hope this helps.

When I Studied English in college I read the Wasp Factory by Iain Banks- It is a disturbing yet great read which gives great analysis of characters as it has a deep story line.
If you want something a little lighter a short story by Alfred Hitchcock, they're always good.
