I think that this tragedy shows that if law abiding citizens apply for and obtain the required permits to carry a hand gun then something like this could be lessened in the future. I am from Utah and we recently had a young man open fire in a mall and killed 6 people. There was an off duty officer who happened to have an gun on his ankle. Had he not intervened the death toll could have been much greater.
The people who carry a gun legally are not the ones to worry about, it is those who illegally obtain the weapons that cause the problems.
I feel for the family of those who were unnecessarily taken and hope that the community can take the appropriate measures to prevent this from happening in the future.

EVERY campus has a rule against that. But if CCW licenses covered college campuses as well, as they do in some states (including mine, if I'm not mistaken), then someone would've been able to kill the bad guy before he even got started.
(Before I hear all the ballyhooing about carrying guns, having a concealed carry permit requires an in-depth FBI background check and 16 hours of intensive training. You can't just go buy one on a whim.)

I agree that a constrained type of scholars with weapons may be a good component. I additionally agree that there would desire to be very solid standards utilized to who would desire to hold. do no longer maximum faculties have Psych. departments? With the protection stress offering a superb type of reward, many veterans are enrolling in college now. many colleges even have people who're examining to alter into cops. Have the Psych dept. show those human beings, supply them a expert protection path and enable them to shelter themselves. i visit varsity and there are a number of pupils i would not want to verify wearing a weapon, yet there are a number of that i've got confidence may be accountable. combating a college shooter in the past hand has shown impossible, protection or the police can no longer continually get to the scene in time; If he had walked right into a room with an armed knowledgeable scholar, the dying toll would have stopped at that room. To all people who say weapons do no longer give up violence; New Jersey has no longer in ordinary terms the toughest anti-gun rules in the rustic, additionally they have 3 of the ten maximum deadly cities in the rustic. In that small of a state that would not seem to coach ok that unarmed voters are safer.

It's a shame that everyone feels the need to look at complex events in a simplistic manner.
Is it possible that someone armed could have stopped this guy? Maybe.
Is it possible that events like this could happen more often if everyone was armed of if it was even easier for people to get armed and walk around? Possibly.
Is it possible that there would be a wild crossfire and more people injured or killed? Possibly.
Is it possible that a gunman could repeatedly rearm himself with guns pulled off of dead victims? Possibly.
Was someone carrying a concealed weapon responsible for this tragedy? Definitely.
This kind of problem has a myriad of contributing factors. It defies a simple answer.

Yesterday I was all for it. Heck if one other student shot the sicko perhaps several lives might have been saved...then gain who knows. However, what I do advocate and make sure all my relatives carry with them is pepper spray or mace, don't know if in this situation it would have helped but at least it was something.

Well in the current case it sure would have helped had some or even one of the students been armed. However one must also weigh the drinking/youth/anger angles and wonder how many anger shooting, or drunk and stupid shootings there would be were students armed

No. But maybe more students can be "deputized" to carry firearms by the campus police.

No, they shouldn't. If I'm not mistaken, the college campus where I work has a rule against that.
