Should we not mandate that serial numbers be located on several parts of a gun, and difficult, if not impossible to erase? Imagine my surprise when I learned the NRA has fought against this very same idea! Why do we need to track handguns?, its not like people use them to murder 32 people in a crowded classroom!

You make an excellent point! I wonder why the NRA is so dead set against it. After all, no one's Second Amendment rights would be violated!

You can track a handgun by it's ballistic "fingerprint" more accurately, so the serial number can be irrelevant.

The NRA is against government tracking of handguns because if they know where the guns are, they'll know whose door to knock on when they manage to pass a law that allows them to confiscate them. Quite frankly, I don't want the government coming to my door.

If someone goes through the trouble of erasing serial numbers, the chances are great that they have that gun illegally anyway.

There isn't a serial number in the world that would stop the firearm from being used in a crime.
Tracking doesn't stop the crime.
What does it matter?
