i believe that winning this war has to be achieved by shifting the mentality of those under the spell of radical islam. the war is not winnable by military force alone, nor is it winnable by diplomacy alone. rather, these two approaches must be done in tandem but in addition, the extremist mentality has to be eradicated and replaced by a more tolerant mindset accomplished by the modernization that has occured in christianity and judaism neither of which has factions of their extremists running around the world murdering people anymore simply for their religious beliefs. having a stable governement in iraq is essential to the success of modernization in the middle east but that is only a piece of this puzzle.

Actually, quite a good question. Here's my take on it. Winning the war on terror means that either there aren't enough terrorist left alive to be considered a threat or they have decided they love their children more than they hate us. There will always be misguided individuals capable of recruiting followers (Charles Manson, Jim Jones for example).

As to winning in Iraq, I think it's more like planting a virus in a computer. If we can get democracy to succeed in one country, with all the liberties and wealth the western countries have, it will spread. Syrians will want it, Iranians will want it, Libyans will want it. Winning in Iraq is just a step forward in the war on terrorism.

Interesting Question.
That the Bush Bubble is able to spin the current quagmire in Afghanistan and Iraq as war on terror frightens me more then anything else.
"The War On Terror" is like "The War On Drugs" a carte blanche for the government to create powerful agencies, sucking up trillions of tax money into bottomless pits, whiteout ever showing the slightest positive result.

It method setting apart extremists so this sort of factor- the 'moderates' upward thrust out and talk towards them. But this are not able to occur in dictatorships, simplest in democracies in which the bulk rule- now not the extremist minority. Unfortunately, to win this lengthy crusade- it's going to take a minimum of one more twenty years, probably as many as 50 years to wipe out extremist concept. Witch includes developing loose and reasonable elections, and the preventing of states who sponsor terror.

winning the war on terror means living in an orwellian state, because the war on terror is a contradiction in terms.war creates terror.fear is created by the fear of death, the unknown.the terrorist are the people that create the anxiety in you.welcome to the land of the not so free.we can't win the war on terror, but big brother will win the war on controlling the population

No it wont end in Iraq and a body count wont determine the outcome either. We have to keep on the offensive until they realize that we wont sit back and allow it to happen. They feed on our fears,if we show them that we are not afraid of them and we stay in the fight, they will lose their edge and begin to back down, this will take some time and nationwide strength. After 9/11 we all stood together, now its old news and its over, well its not over. The Japanese used suicide tactics in WW II and swore they would fight to the death Hiroshima and Nagasaki changed their tune real quick. We hear the same from the jihad's and they use similar tactics.

As long as Satan exists, there will be terrorism or something like it. All you can do is attempt damage control. That is what our military is trying to do now. The biggest enemy right now is the enablers, the people who don't understand the situation and criticize the effort. This gives the bad guys hope of winning. I am afraid they will too. The enemy is within.

Terrorism has existed since the beginning of time and will exist until the end of time.

We will have victory in Iraq when we have a puppet state which is allowing us to rape their oil resources.
