a good free defragger is a excellent addition to your software libary, but finding the right one is another problem
diskeeper(http://www.download.com/Diskeeper/3000-2094_4-10600084.html?tag=lst-0-2)is probally the best defragging tool you can get and although its not free,a 30 day trial is avalible to try it out
diskeeper is one of the few defraggers that can actually defrag your hard drive while you continue to work, this is done by a method known as InvisiTasking
this keeps your hard drive defragged and at optimal performance,so your hard drive and computer wil allways be at full speed
good luck mate

The built in defrag isn't that great, but in Vista it's horribly dumbed down. Highly lacking options and visuals.

I just use windows and find it OK....Go to start, Control Panel, performance and maintenance and then re-arrange items on your hard disc. That should do it.
