Agreed on all counts. Universities (I work at one too) have police and security procedures--but there's no way to anticipate somethinglike this. It's a horrible tragedy, to be sure. But there's no such thing *** perfect safety. VT did nothing wrong; in fact, from what I've heard, they appear to have handled the situation well.

Now this is a good question..Virginia Tech 's Administration is not trained for such evil as this, but those students asked if there was something going on and they were told to just continue to go to there classes..Now I ask you whether trained or not this Administration should have called a lock down stop all classes get to a safe place ....pull alarms break windows get out ..get on the damn P.A. SYSTEM for God's sakes these students were ambused by an Idiot looking for his girlfriend.....They call it the worsed in the history of the U.S. It's an embarrassment to this country for not saving these precious lives ......I Blame the college .government and the laws on gun control.....so what's left .....yes it will happen again but let's hope the people take action not the evil predator.....GA kara

No, I don't think that it's fair to criticize the VT administration for being unprepared. After all, no one expects some wacko to go on a shooting rampage at a college campus. Unfortunately, though, since this sort of thing is becoming more commonplace, I kind of wonder if it would be a good idea to start training campus police nationwide to deal more effectively with such situations.

Prepared for what? Prepared for a crazy lunatic to come rampaging in with a gun? Who is prepared for that? I think it is near impossible to stop this sort of thing from happening at that stage. What do you propose that they do? Search every student? Metal detectors? I doubt any other these measures would stop someone like that. The only way you keep things like this from happening is to arm the public and the other students that go there.

Isn't it standard procedure to close the campus while a gunman is still on the loose? I find it hard to believe that they allowed so many students to congregate in an unprotected environment while there was still no understanding of exactly what had happened or where the gunman had gone. The actions taken presented the killer with an opportunity no lunatic could pass up.
The president should resign. He made a bad call. And it happened on his watch so ultimately the buck stops on his desk.

Political Correctness is to blame for all those people who died yesterday. It will kill us all if we don't come to our senses and put things back into proper perspective.
Because of P.C. they banned all guns on campus even for police and security personel.
Every action has a reaction and the reaction to eliminating safety on campus made it unsafe and therefore removing all forms of defense from School grounds.
What would happen if we disarmed all police officers and made them resort to alternative methods of enforcing the law and protecting us?If your answer is "Crime would escalate and more homocides would occur".You would be right.
Well apply that same reasoning to what the School caused to happen when they disarmed the police and security on campus.
When the cats away the mice will play.

Yeah they were the ones who actually thought that because guns were banned on campus that nobody would ever carry one on campus. They should have figured it out when the cop got killed on campus, that just because laws are in place doesnt meant that everyone is going to follow the law. Were the security guards there packing heat or did they just have pepper spray, and an asp. Two hour delay in the killings and yet the second killings happened because it took them that long to get the word out, maybe they were trying to figure out how someone got a gun on campus with the law saying they couldnt have them. They should be fired, everyone of them.

How can any institution be prepared for a horrific event like this. I think the school admin acted in a rational manner. Who would have thought he could continue 2 hours later? I do think that the students should have known that a unknown gunman was on the loose. A lock down would have made sense. But hind site is 20/20.

A lot of college campuses are very open and quite vulnerable to attacks. The blame should really rest on whoever let that freak into this country without making sure he was mentally stable. There are a lot of countries that hate the U.S., and I can see why Korea would be one of them. They should be real careful about letting foreigners in for our own safety! We need to protect the innocent from the nuts!

It is absolutely fair. There should have been some form of better warning system. I heard one of the officials say that they didn't want to take an alarmist position. TWO PEOPLE AT YOUR SCHOOL HAD JUST BEEN SHOT TO DEATH!!!!. It was time to close every building, and guard it with police until they knew that the situation was clear. This is a ridiculous tragedy that could have been avoided.
