it already has a GB, and I wanted to add more. I HAVE opened the case and I can see that it has 4 slots for memory, 2 of them are already in use. my computer is still very new, but I'm not afraid to do upgrades myself as I have done them before. my computer is an HP Pavilion running Windows Xp.
I want to add another 1GB stick.. can one slot handle 1 GB?.. in that case, I could (if I wanted) upgrade to a total of 4 GB ..correct?

I think in your HP Pavilion PC can handle 1GB on one slot. You can also contact HP Customer Care they will tell you how much maximum memory you can install in your PC.

Your fact does no longer compute. in case you have been speaking approximately your trickychronic potential it would make extra experience. once you start up your computing device, the working equipment plenty, then any courses that are listed contained in the initiating-up sequence will load. this might take in some RAM. to work out precisely how plenty RAM is getting used at any given 2d open up activity supervisor and seem on the overall performance tab. The little graph decrease than memory will point out how plenty memory is at present getting used. contained in the section actual memory entire will teach you the way plenty RAM is obtainable after the video card steals some. the quantity of RAM a working laptop or computing device could have is desperate by using the specs of the mum Board. Older desktops might desire to in straight forward terms have 2GB. All extra moderen desktops making use of the Intel I sequence processors could have as much as 4GB of RAM for the 32 Bit working equipment and 16GB of RAM for the sixty 4 Bit working equipment.

it depends on the specification of the motherboard. some motherboard can only handle up to a specific amount of RAM per slot. Do check your manual. Adding more RAM then it can handle will result in unexpected PC shut down.

if 2 slot are presently in used, with 1 GB, it could well meant dat each slot is presently with 512 MB each. unless u replace these 2 slot with 1 GB each, u will never be able to upgrade to a total of 4 GB, unless u purchase RAM higher then 1.5 GB.

1Gb is a good amount of RAM. Check the HP website too see what you need. Windows can only handle a little less than 4Gb anyways so its not worth maxing the RAM out anyway. I would invest the money in getting a good top end Graphics card, again check what you can install in this system and get a good nVidia card and see what it does. The Video card will reduce the video overhead that the original system was designed to handle. It will most likely remove all of this load and allow you CPU and RAM to be available for the games you want to run. Really only the games will use the RAM most other application will allow windows to handle their ram and the more ram you have the more windows shares out.

Hope this helps.

Usually when it has four slots it means four gigs, but with 1 gig each sticks. Right now you must have two 512 mb sticks
