I think the monkey was suicidal and was hoping the bear would stop and use his paw to slap the monkey's head off. i have no other clue why a tiny animal would torment a large animal with great strength and a bad temper.

The monkey should have stuck to chasing a weasel just as his ancestors did in the cobbler days.
