I really feel for the friends and families of the students who were victims of this tragedy. This really was unnecessary - I'm sure SOMEBODY knew something was starting to change about the shooter - weeks, even months before now...and they didn't say anything. Why? Maybe it's just that hindsight is 20/20. Maybe they were thinking about the passengers on the plane who reported suspicious behavior and are now being threatened with a lawsuit, I don't really know for sure.
I do think the college could have done more to communicate the first shooting to the students. I think most normal people would have thought it was an isolated incident, BUT people should have been warned right away - and not just by e-mail.
For those who say classes should have been cancelled, the shooter was a student. What was stopping him from shooting up another dorm instead?
Maybe more could have been done, but given the facts (and not what the media is saying to try to encite panic) I think lives probably would have still been lost regardless....maybe not the SAME lives, but just as many. We're only talking about 2 hours to investigate and try to find the responsible party - Even if they knew right away who was responsible, how long do you think it would have taken people to find him?
2 hours may seem like a long time between shootings, but if you think about everything involved in identifying and then finding a suspect - I don't think the result would have been any different.
It's really sad this has happened - but I'm not sure anything good can ever come out of blaming the university.

Well, it has nothing to do with the President or the Democrats that control the House. This has gone on for years. Removing guns from the hands of the innocent will change nothing, when a determined person can make a gun from a Hardware Store. The only thing I really know that people can do to prevent this is maybe metal detectors at door ways of public places, and that be hard to do. Heck, I have a metal rod in my leg from when I broke it years ago and I sound off metal detectors sometimes. People need to be aware of others and what they saying. Was this young man depressed and trying to reach out for a person to talk too? Were others making fun of him? So, many questions that will go unanswered.
I tell a story. When I was in my 20's a friend of ours was trying to reach out over a problem he had. We all laugh and say; "Man, it OK, just drink a Beer and relax". After about a week of not seeing him, a friend and myself saw his brother and ask where he was. His brother said; "We were at our grandparents and he took a Shotgun behind the barn and killed himself"! I was shocked and swore that day I would be more concerned for a person wanting to talk. No matter how trivial their problem may be. I will also be a friend to a person I see not have a friend. This was a sad moment for many people at V-Tech. As it is sad in the many other times this has happened. I feel the biggest thing people can do is have a genuine concern for others and stop the hate and Egotistic abuse of others. People are social creatures. We need friends we can trust and talk to that have a real concern for our emotions.
It really did not affect me as I was not there, but, it was a sad moment we as a whole will question for many years; "What could have been done different to prevent this"? They say this man was a loner, maybe he just needed a friend.

It is a nightmare, I couldnt sleep last night thinking about the students, you go to school to work for your future, to learn something and to be a better human being, and someone who dont appreciate its own life comes and takes someone else dreams and work forever. That is not fair, now there are more questions than answers, why in the world the university didnt turn on the alarm, why sending a email knowing that so early in the morning people dont check them, where were the securities??? dont they walk around campus? how this maniatic freak put locks at the doors around the building? It is so sad how violente our society is becoming day after day.

First off, to another person who respond to the question with more concern about the Republican party rather than the families of those killed. It's horrid that you would consider a politcal party rather than the death of 30+ people.

It has affected me greatly, in that, this could happen anywhere at anytime. I hope now that schools across the country will take the efforts to attempt to better secure their grounds if something like this was to ever arise again.

I am deeply saddened and my heart goes out to the families and friends of the victims. This is a senseless act and I dont believe the VT administration or police could have done any more with the policies that they had in place. Im sure that will change now but isntt it a little late for those who died??? I cant begin to wrap my mind around this. Trying to make sense out of something that makes none at all.

I heard it here in the UK today.
I was so shocked at the news of 33 dead mascaraed, without mercy.
they could have done more to prevent the masacar,2hrs before the gun man had killed two people,
they should have stricter laws on guns.
I think they should have done more to prevent the lost of lives.
I think on everyones mind is what could/should have been done to prevent this masacar.
also why?why did the gun man do this, what provoked him to masacar his fellow students, without mercy.
my thoughts are with the families, the loved one they've lost.
also it will make it hard for the parents, students,to come to terms with this.
It is also not painting a good picture on the U.S.A. and their laws on guns.
I think we need to do something to prevent this ever happening ever again,we need tighter laws on guns/weapons.

I'm more concerned at whether it has affected our presidents ratings, or more so the republicans ratings in the up coming presidential race. I think the president should distance himself for this to save the republicans time
