Tom wants a pen that cost $100, so he borrowed $50 from his mom and another $50 from his dad, so he got enough money to buy the pen. But, at the last moment there is a discount. The pen now cost $97, so he received a $3 change. He returned his parents $1 each, so he still owe both of them $49 each. However, 49+49+1= 99, so where the $1 go?
i dun understand.

He owes them $50 each and he return them $1 each so he owe them $49 each. Since he have a change of $3, this means he kept $1. However, 49 + 49 + 1 = 99 only. So where the $1 go to?

You're making a big mistake here. I'll illustrate.

See, he receives $3 change.

He gives BOTH his parents $1.

So, he owes both $ 49.

49 + 49 + 2 = 100

The mistake:
You must add 2 to the 49's as he returns $ 1 to BOTH parents, thereby paying off $2 from his total debt.

I'd also like to see the pen that costs that much.

if he received $3 back he should have given his mom and dad $1.50 which is half of 3. he must have kept the other dollar.
