Please help! I have a painful clogged milk duct and I'm so afraid it is going to turn into an infection. What can I do to help the clogged duct before it turns into something more serious?

I guess I forgot to mention...I did call the doc BEFORE coming on yahoo...they said it is a clogged duct, use warm compresses. Just wanted to hear from experienced moms what they did to help with the problem.

Put a nice hot pack on the clogged milk duct. Take a hot shower and have the water run on the area. Before you feed massage the area, even if it hurts. If you start to get a fever or have flu like symptoms call your doctor. They will give you antibiotics and the infection will go away quickly. Just make sure you empty your breast by either nursing or pumping. If you can hold your baby so his/her chin is pointing in the direction of the area that will also help. Good luck!

Use warm compreses like your Dr. said and at the same time as the compresses get your baby to nurse from that breast often with his chin pointed toward the clogged duct if possible. Gently massage the clogged duct in a circular motion with the warm compress while your baby breastfeeds. This worked for me! Good luck!

I've had this issue multiple times. It's stressful, isn't it? What I do is always start nursing on the affected side until I can no longer feel the plugged duct or pain. As I'm feeding, I do breast compressions on the affected area (use your thumb & gently move it over the plugged duct and towards the nipple w/out touching the nipple area--sort of like you are pushing the plugged area out). You may feel pain for a day or so, maybe even more than this, but this has always helped me. Hot showers before feeding can also help. Good luck!

Try gently rubbing your breast towards the nipple. I have had clogged milk ducts and you need to massage the area to break up the clog. You may have thickened milk come out; that's okay, that's just the clog. A warm pack on the spot or a warm shower will also help. Pumping may help alleviate the pain, but I had better results with the massaging.

Apply a warm compress and massage the lump. Also if its a possible angle, line the babies chin up with where the clogged duct is which should help move it out faster. Just keep rubbing and heating and it should clear up soon. Good luck.

Take a hot shower and then let your baby nurse. If that doesn't work try a warm compress and knead your breast to see if you can work the plug out. My baby was always able to clear my clogs in a day or two. Just keep nursing or it will get more painful.

I just finished breastfeeding my daughter. She is one now. I had a plugged milk duct and what worked for me was getting into the shower and letting warm water hit my breast. This will stimulate the milk flow and unclog the duct. If you have a breast pump, try pumping a little milk. This will also help.

Drink TONS of water. A hot shower will relieve the pain...soap up your boob and try to get behind the clog and massage out towards your nipple. Make the shower as hot as you can stand it.

Good luck-I know how much this hurts and also know the fear that it will get worse. By following the advice I am giving you, I never did get any infections.

Vary the position you nurse in so that you are emptying all the milk ducts.

Take a warm shower and massage the area of the plug. Or apply head and do massage.

Nurse frequently. Drink plenty of fluids.

Do breast compressions while nursing to help make sure you are emptying the breast.

nurse the baby on the clogged side as often as humanly possible...if it hurts, take an anagelsic (call doc for a reference) but it needs to get drained...hot showers help, anything that makes you leak will help....also, rest, take it easy, treat yourself like you have the flu....drink plenty of water, have some vitamin C, sleep, ....this prevents infection.
One last 'old wives' remedy is to point your childs nose in the direction of the clog when nursing....even if this means getting on all 4's and turning baby around to face the bottom of your breast.....this sounds hard to me...but supposedly it works every time! good luck
