Donnie Darko is probably my favourite movie.

As I understand it (and after some searching for info on the web) what happens is like this: While Donnie and his Dad and others are watching the game on TV, the clock strikes
and at this point a parallel reality comes into existence. Here events are divided between the real world and this alternate one - therefore when the jet engine falls on Donnie's house, there really wasnt a plane above his house for one to fall from (in the real universe). Frank instructs Donnie to do several things that will make stable the real 'reality' as if the parallel one is not 'closed', it will destroy itself and actual reality with it.

Basically, Donnie sets in motion certain events that will, amongst other things, ensure there is a plane in the sky at the right location and moment so that a jet engine can fall off it and crush his house. (These are often small things but chain reactions result in big ones happening). This will then make reality stable again and close the alternate one.

It is really confusing because I think some events take place in the 'real' reality and some in the alternate reality. Everybody gets confused with this film, but I think that's one thing that makes it such a masterpiece - you can essentially make up your own understanding of it. (oh, and its not without its flaws).

I really would recommend watching the explanation of the film which is included on some of the DVD's that have been released (there have been several releases). Also, I recommend checking out Wikipedia - you can see what Richard Kelly's interpretation is in writing in there.

A truly brilliant film in my opinion - dig up the explanations on the net and other people's interpretations, and then watch it again - and yup - its still roughly as confusing as the first time but maybe you'll be a little closer to understanding it. :P

No, the storyline grew to become into completely fictitious, as have been each and every of the terrific characters. of course the incredibly people who extremely lived as represented in cameos have been real, like Mr. and Mrs. Strauss and Molly ("the unsinkable") Brown. yet Jack and all them have been organic fabrications. Cameron particularly lots stole the full plot line from a television action picture version of "great" and yet another some years in the previous that, yet then Cameron's on no account been previous stealing textile. additionally borrowed lots from 1952's "great" starring Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck, and Robert Wagner. you may desire to make certain each and every of the above action pictures, BTW, besides as Hitchcock's "Lifeboat" .

yes time travel is the basis of the story but not a wormhole... all the bad things that happened in the movie like Gretchen dying, the school flooding , that guys house burning down, all that happened after Donnie was supposed to be in his bed but wasn't that night when He jet fell in to his room. In the end when he is holding Gretchen he realizes everything and wishes he had been in bed that night so Gretchen wouldn't have to die. he would never had met her had he been in bed where he was supposed to be. His life was so fucked up that if he died it would be OK for him.

OR......

you can look at it like he did die in the beginning and the movie was about what it would be like if he had lived. B/c of Frank and everything that happened b/c of Frank.

It has been a while since i have seen it but i think that's what I got out of the movie.

I think it had quite a few themes, but I found one to be most interesting. Here is my interpretation.

Most of the movie is him seeing/living what would happen if he got out of bed the night the house got crushed. At the end he ends up having the choice of whether to die or go through the events again. The second time around he chooses to die. He sacrifices himself for the girl. It was a dark love story.

I saw the movie at least 4 times and I see every time that is is about unpredictability and circumstances beyond our control. That you can try to change the course of matter around you but inevitably it`s going to go a predetermined course. And also, how foolish and ignorant people really are.
