No.
We must be careful not to over-react. The tragedy of the Va Tech shootings are awful, but we have been sliding down a slippery slope since 9/11. I believe we need to be diligent. I believe we need to be aware. But I do not for one moment believe that we need to be frightened. If we do, then the terrorists -- both the Radical Islamic Extremists and the guy who just goes bonkers at the university -- will win. I don't want that to happen. I want to live my life emboldened. If I'm to be killed by a terrorist someday, so be it. At least I will not have lived in fear.

That's what I just said. It isn't possible and it still wouldn't guarantee a gunman could overpower a security guard, right? I don't think installing metal detectors at every entrance at college dorms and classroom buildings is possible. Can you imagine how annoying it'd be to have to empty all your pockets, take off your shoes, possibly be searched every time you went to class or to your dorm? And it's kind of an invasion of privacy. I think everyone needs to start concentrating on being more villigant of warning signs. I know that this student that did this wasn't your ordinary happy go lucky student! He must have said or acted in a suspicious matter. Was he not taken serious maybe 'cause he was Asian? That's a possiblity. I'm not saying this to be racist but Asians are just not seen generally as a physically threatning or violent race. They are generally a small built and are quiet and studious in a multi-cultural school! I bet if he was a Middle Eastern Muslim, someone would've noticed something about him sooner. People around him must have noticed SOMETHING! If someone in a school (college or otherwise) notices a student acting in a matter peculiar, they need to report it to a school counsler ASAP. Then, the school counsler MUST call the student in and see if it is something serious. I think too many people just don't want to bother or don't want to get involved.

Hell yeah......I believe scanners should be at every exit and that automatically locks down the school when a gun is being detected and that the only way in any school should be with keycards that personally identifies that student.I realize the shooter was a student and a keycard would have let him in but if there were detectors he would have not made it to the school doors.I know a system like this is unlikely to happen because of costs but i know i would donate money for a system like that. It's happened 1 too many times and probably will happen again...i pray not...but their are way too many freaks out there who would rather kill as many people as they can before going down and not seek counselling.

Then people would complain about standing in lines to get in class and complain about being late. There is always going to be a crazy person, I just think you need to watch the people around you. This guy had to have friends that noticed a change in him they should have been the ones to say, look you need help. That is what friends do. Unfortunately, we can not watch every person and know all their thoughts at every moment. Hindsight is always 20/20. Just pray for the victims and their families.

Or pass laws people can carry guns.
Gunmen would think twice if they knew people were packing and if they didn't they can be taken out much quicker than waiting for the police to arrive.
This was a random case and metal detectors etc won't have stop this guy.
The best answer is we start caring about the person next to us than wrap ourselves up in our own lives.
Could this all been avoided if he had a friend to talk to or someone who saw him the all upset ask him what's up.
We have to stop thinking about ourselves and start caring about those around us.
Just because he is a democrat, liberal, conservative, Christian, Jew, or Muslim it shouldn't matter.
A hurting soul is a hurting soul.

It would be good..but the inconvenience of it would make allot of people angry..look at the hassle it is in the airports.
Besides...whats to stop anyone from rampaging through the parking lots or the long lines to the buildings.

Wish the answer was that simple. For every way we create to keep people safe there will always be
some sicko creating a way to circumvent the process.
I was shocked when I read about Virgina Tech. I work
in a middle school and I have seen students just lose it. It is scary.

It's a nice thought, but are you serious? Everytime you want to go to the mall or to eat, you have to wait in line because the 5 people infront of you have a paper clip in their pocket or their keys or metal underwire on their bra???? I don't want to do that every time i go to eat, it would be nice for school, but it will never happen for every school or every public place everywhere

No,
If someone wants to Kill they will Kill. I guess i rather get shot while eating a nice steak than outside in a cold parking lot.
seriously though, Who do you blame when the shooter shoots the people who are waiting in line?

that's true, but it's not worth living in a police state to stop one school shooting every 20 years... which is about the average.
