No, it does not sound legitimate and they were trying to get your checking account number to scam you. Never give out an personal information, checking account information and/or credit card information to anyone you do not know or initiated the contact with.

Legally, if they are legitimate, they must send you within 5 days of the initial a written notice telling you the amount of money you owe, the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and what action to take if you believe you do not owe the money.

Below is a link to the Federal Trade Commission's Q&A section on Fair Debt Collection under the federal law.

Follow up with the credit card company at the customer service number on the last statement and inquire about the debt if you have no knowledge of it or have a balance and wonder if it has been turned over to a collection agency.

Even if it is a legitimate collection, it is unscrupulous for the collector to say you the things that are mentioned above, but as many collectors get a percentage of what they collect, they sometimes resort to guerrilla tactics to make their payday because they figure no one will find out or believe you if you report them, which is against the law.

Under FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act) you can get a free credit report annually by requesting one through the following.

its against the law for collection agencies to intimidate you, get a pocket recorder and record your entire conversation, the you have proof. pull your credit report online for $20 bucks. call the credit card company and talk to them about it first. good luck, dont let those bastards get the best of you
