it was a publicity stunt that the city put on. they are still makig money on the trial today. the teacher never taught a science class. they had lawyers searching for a teacher willing to go for trial for the case.the movie and the play inhert the wind has nothing to do with actual events of the trial. here is a couple of articles.also think that the discovery channel did a great show on this. the city of Dayton wanted publicity.

In my opinion it's a disgrace that people who should know better dragged a teacher to court for teaching a scientific theory.
They made total fools of themselves.
