From where I should start. Perhaps with some background.
Eras of both Jawaharlal Nehru (Nehru) and Indira Gandhi (IG) had different demands for the nation. Nehru assumed PM's office when India had just undergone partition, heavy blood shed, broken families and hearts and a kind of scattered dreams. The demand of the time was for solace, uniting families, building confidence, giving leadership and direction. Nehru, probably realised all this and tried to give the nation, alongwith his team - including a well known Iron Man Sardar Patel, a sense belongingness, unity, love, peace, direction and possible connections with the world as the situations permitted him.
Now for IG, it was the time ripe to build the nation on the basic guidelines provided by her predecessors. Vested interests were hard core and determined to concentrate economic powers in a few hands, letting down India in the world scene and were trying to squeeze the nation beyond shape. There was a need of a strong leader with Iron Hand. This Iron Lady, against all odds, nationalised 14 major banks to make the economic growth reach the common man and break financial cartel, scaled down long maritime continuous threat to India by creating Bangladesh, had India's first nuclear test to deter India bashers to stay cautious, internally tried to fight corrupts, attempted foundation for the industrialisation of the nation, promoted green and white revolution.........and emergency too (which Nehru could never think of)!
History confirms that needs of India were quite different in the regimes of Nehru and IG, IG chose to accelerate the path, though not necessarily followed by Nehru, but was essential as per her vision and wisdom. And it is desire-able as well. Like what Jamshedji did, Ratan Tata is essentially modifying and doing today. Same is true for Dhirubhai and both his sons. One has to rise as per the needs of the time and act accordingly, even in each of our households.
Both Nehru and IG would be remembered for their respective roles in Indian history - whether good or bad, depending upon an individual's perspective of the things.

Surprising u don't who Indira Gandhi was. She was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, mother of the late Rajiv and Sanjay Gandhi and mostly importantly was the Prime Minister of India. She was and still remembered as an iron lady because she ruled the country with courage and daring. She yielded so much power that being a lady she could rule over such a vast huge country like India. Though she made some mistakes she really ruled the country well. Even today we will not be able to get a Prime Minister like her. Being the woman in a man's world is truly commendable. Hats off to her. In my opinion she ruled the country with a firm hand and in return she gained respect and admirers all over the world and hence till today people still refer to her as the iron lady.

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi, was Prime Minister of India from January 19, 1966 to March 24, 1977, and again from January 14, 1980 until her assassination on October 31, 1984. She was India's first and to date only female prime minister.
Daughter of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and mother of another, Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi was one of India's most remarkable political leaders after independence. She was of no relation to Mahatma Gandhi: she took the famous surname when she married Feroze Gandhi
She was called Iron Lady because she had the courage to take hard decisions and implement the same.

as to learning from her father: "Growing up in the sole care of her mother, who was sick and alienated from the Nehru household, Indira developed strong protective instincts and a loner personality."
