Coz hip-hop is the in-thing .
So if they are with the crowd, it makes them think they are cool ; unlike being a nerd which is a turn off to many

Your right, hip hop in today's culture serves no purpose, I mean even in the streets nobody pays any sort of attention to it anymore, Kids.... just because they drive RENTED Bentley's and Lamborghini's in the video's doesn't mean they have any real power or they care what they say to you..... all they care about is getting enough money to buy a huge house, 20 cars, and their own record label... that usually goes under in 2 year's time, why don't you listen to something that not only expands your mind, but also Say's something that you can directly relate to :)

Hip-hop is associated with everything that is "cool" as a teenager - drugs, dancing, sex, hot women/men. Other genres have stereotypes too, for example, classical music lovers are stuck-up, jazz lovers are refined, metal lovers are hardcore.
Young people basically seek out things to affirm their own personal beliefs of their self-worth. Music preferences never last a lifetime and this is due to a person's constant re-evaluating of what's important to him/her. For teenagers, image is most important, so hip-hop is extremely popular because of it's "cool" image.

seriously: genre preference. This music associates with "things that seem cool to you"
coolness varies on a case-by-case basis. These people who listen to hip-hop are just overconfident, and as we all know "coolness" and the "it-thing" are always-changing. Recall the Backstreet boys? me neither.

Because they're dumb. It's the same reason why 40 year-old men think that driving a Porsche and cheating on their wives makes them cool...And why 21-29 year old people think that drinking themselves into oblivion makes them cool...And why nerds think that having the most customized computer makes them cool. Stupidity is the answer in every case.

They do not have a mind of their own to seek out quality music with integrity to the lyrics and that does not rip off other music (i.e. using the same background as a previously recorded song and passing it off as new and original). More people need to start thinking for themselves. Just say NO to rap music!

I never got the connection that because you like a certain kind of music you are either cool or uncool.
Music is like ice cream there are many flavours and liking one verses the other is just a matter of personal taste.

well to kids music is life they hear the things they say in the music and maybe they are doing it or going to do it of maybe they think its cool cause they like it it sounds like you need to grow up a lil
