im not tring to take anything away from him hes a great player but in the new NHL if some one like Wayne Gretzky played i think he would blow Sidney out of the water and i don't even think he was the best player on the Penguins. if the didn't have Marc-André Fleury they wouldn't be where they are he faced the 6th most shots in the NHL and he didn't play as many games as the other leaders

Over publicized... yes

Over exposed.... yes

Over rated??? Let's wait and see

As of right now, he's a strong and abundantly talented young hockey player. If he continues on this track, he will go down in the record books alongside Gretzky and Lemieux...not replace them. If he falters like a lot of young guys do, then he will be just another name...

Only time will tell

You are comparing Fleury and Crosby to make your point? If a goalie is the best you can do, then you've got a weak argument.

Quick question for you. Who is the youngest player to score 100 points in the NHL, Gretzky or Crosby? The answer is Crosby. Now, I am not saying he is better than Gretzky necessarily, BUT... Crosby is only 19 years old. How can you "overrate" a player that lead the entire league in scoring at only 19 years old? And he did it without Messier or Kurri or Coffey to help him out. And he did it in an era where the average score of a game is not 6-5. And he checks and plays defense pretty well, too, which is something Gretzky never did. That does not necessarily make Crosby the best, but it is WAY too early to think Crosby is overrated.

I'll tell you one thing. There were tons of non-Oiler fans saying the exact same thing about Gretzky when he came into the league. The reason? Jealousy. Pure jealousy. If Crosby played for your favorite team, you'd probably be touting him as the next coming of Jesus.

First of all, having Marc-Andre Fleury is irrelevent. A goalie does not help a player win the Art Ross Trophy, which Crosby did.

Crosby is the best player currently playing, so it's kind of difficult to say he's overrated. In order to be overrated, somebody has to be better than you, but who currently playing is better than Crosby? Nobody.

As for comparing Crosby to Gretzky, I'm not entirely sure Gretzky would blow Crosby out of the water. This is only Crosby's second year playing professional hockey. Remember that Gretzky had already played a couple years in the WHA. Plus, if you account for the change in scoring, caused by such things as bigger goalies, more effective defensive strategies, etc. Crosby is right up there with Gretzky in everything but goals scored.

I don't feel Crosby is overrated at all. Like others have mentioned, he isn't playing with the talent Gretzky had the honor to play with and Goalies are certainly much better today than they were in Gretzky's day. I don't think Sidney will beat Gretzky's point totals in his career but he will likely leave his mark as one of the greatest to play the game if he continues to progress as he has in his first 2 seasons and doesn't get plagued by injuries. Only time will tell the tale of Sidney Crosby but thus far, he sure seems to have the tools to be "The Next One"

No, absolutely not. If you look at the stats from his first two seasons and compare them to the stats from Gretzky and Lemieux's first two seasons, he fits in quite well. His numbers aren't as high, but, if you adjust them to make up for the fact that overall scoring is down in the league compared to what it was when Gretzky and Lemieux were starting, then it comes out about equal. (There is a mathematical formula for doing this adjustment, but I won't get into that much detail.)

Also, I want to add that there's no such thing as an over-exposed hockey player. The NHL needs to everything it possibly can to sell itself in the United States. I'd love to see Sidney Crosby (and other NHL stars) on every commercial on TV.

First of all, Crosby has little to do with how many shots Fleury has faced throughout the season-that falls on the defense and the coaching staff (they design the system of play for the team). Secondly, I dont know of any other current player that can control the puck the way Crosby does. He is an animal when he is in the corner and behind the net. His awareness is amazing-he jukes out his own players at times because they arent prepared for the incredible and seemingly impossible passes he makes (just ask Recchi, Roberts or Armstrong). My only issue with him is that he passes up prime opportunities to shoot the puck in order to pass it. Otherwise, he is the premier player in the NHL. Barring injury, he will be in the recordbooks. (he already has a couple of records in only his second year).

A little bit. Some people act as if he is a god on the ice now. In a few years he will be, but for now he is an extremely good player. But hes not the great one yet.

And you are thinking of Gretzky at his peak, which was slightly older than Crosby's current age.

No, I dont think he is overrated. His arrived at his point total at a younger age than Gretzky did.
Don't forget that Gretzky also had Mark Messier, Paul Coffe, etc. to help him along the way too.
It is yet to be seen whether Crosby makes the same impact as the great one did.

I agree with some of the answers upstairs. I don't see how someone who wins the Art Ross at so young an age and is such an exciting young player can be "overrated".

I think the media that forgets that there are 600 other players and 29 other teams is the one that is "overrated".

He is definetly what hockey needs to get back on the map as a major sport. He won the Art Ross before Gretzkey, He got his team to the playoffs before Gretzkey (not that Malkin, Staal, Fluery, Recchi, Talbot, Thaibult, Roberts, Gonchar, Christanseen, ect. didn't help) he is possibly the leauge MVP and has got a fair shot at lifting Lord Stanley's cup before Gretzkey. Over rated? Let's wait and see.
