I don't think books are the way to go, either. The industry is just too dynamic. As soon as someone would write a book, it would be out of date. So, I too, would recommend magazines. I would, however, try Simple Scrapbooks over Creating Keepsakes. As the name implies, it focuses on simple layouts.

There's also an excellent free Scrapbooking course that you can get from:
http://www.hobbycraftsecrets.com/scrapbooking-course.html
It'll help to get you started, teach you all the basics and also give you one scrapbook page idea after another so that you can easily and quickly create excellent scrapbooks.

Scrp Books don't have titles or authors. Usually they are just plain albums. But if you want a book on scrapbooking look for the magazine CREATING KEEPSAKES. It very good ideas for begginners.

Cheche is right - magazines are a great way to help you get started. Does it have to be a book? There are a lot of great websites out there that are full of information.
www.creatingkeepsakes.com
www.twopeasinabucket.com
are two of my favorite sites
Lisa Bearnson writes books and sells stuff on tv (shop at home!). She has great ideas and you can get her books online at CK or your favorite book retailer online.
Heidi Swapp and Becky Higgins are also good authors to try.
I would start online because the resources are free.
