Send them both an email saying "it's come to my attention that that you have been talking about me in a less than friendly way. As I'm sure you understand, birthday parties are for friends to share in a special day together, and therefore I hope you can appreciate that if people are not acting as my friend I would prefer not to have them at my birthday party. With all due respect, I would like to withdraw my invitation. I hope that this does not cause offence in any way. Kind regards. Swept away. "
Don't stoop to their level! Rise above their insecure and unpleasant behaviour!

It's very awkward to "uninvite" someone; there's really no easy way. The best thing to do is to meet with them personally and tell them you're hurt to find out they were bitching about you and give them a chance to hear their side of the story. You may want to leave the invitation open to them. If you sincerely feel they hurt you, then just let them know you don't want them at your party after all, and that their invitation has been rescinded. Good luck and Happy Birthday!

simply tell them you have decided to make the party smaller and only your closest most intimate friends will be coming and maybe you'll be making a plan for a more something else to do with them. if they're offended, oh well. you were not rude and they'll get over it. you have every right to have your party YOUR WAY so you can enjoy it. be more selective and thoughtful before you issue invites next time. life goes on.

Tell them that you overbooked and are having to cut back on the guest list and only invite those closest to you.

Pull a 'Studio 51' and tell them that the 'theme' of your party has changed, and consequently so has the guest list.
Unfortunately, they are no longer on it.

Tell them you think its for the best that they do not come. If they ask why. Just say it seems like we do not get along very well and for me (your self ) and othe rit would be the best.

Let them know you are aware of what they have been saying and that since this is your celebration--you'll be just fine without their negative attitudes present.

Actually,
You should let them come and show them you are more mature.
After that, you dont ever have to talk to them again.
