Today, I found my pet mouse dead in the cage. My boyfriend thinks we should bury her, but I don't know if she died of illness or of something else (she was still young). I am afraid that, if she was ill, some animal could find and eat her, and become ill too, and so maybe it will be better to burn her or something. What to do with her? Are we breaking some laws if we burn or bury her? I don't know what to do, it is the first time a pet dies on me and I am still shocked from the ugly sight, please help!

There is a good reason why I was shocked... first because it was so sudden, and second, because her sisters had eaten a good third of the body and hidden half the head in their house!

It's okay to bury her.
If the room is cool at times or the temperature changes from warm to cold at night, a single mouse can die without warm bedding and a source of warmth.
Mice need fresh clean water, some water drippers don't work reliably, the can be plenty of water in the bottle and none in the stainless steel tube.
If the mouse is in a cage and there is a flow of air passing through the room the mouse will get too cold.
Next time if you buy doe mice get three, they do much better with company. I have 12 mice, seven of them are wild, it's like keeping a zoo.
Join a good mouse group and read the posts, ask questions, describe your mouse and how she was, the group will help work out what went wrong.

How is it breaking the law to burn or bury it? If that breaks the law then dead family members should be on a wanted list.

If it was a contagious illness, your mouse caught it already, and the illness is already out there. So burying the mouse won't make much difference. Think of all the animals that have already died in nature of such illnesses.

If you are afraid to bury her don't be, but if you don't want to then throw her away. Don't burn her there are laws against that I think. Sorry for your loss hang in there!

I'm sorry for your loss...when my pet mice/rats died, I always buried them with a large stone on top of their bodies, so it would be harder for an animal to dig them up. I wouldn't worry about poisoning other animals.

You can give her a proper burial....If you dig deep enough, no other animal should dig her up....burning sure is quick, rather gross though....I've buried at least 4 birds, they always stayed buried....sorry for your loss...

First you burry the mouse and get yourself together and go out to a petshop and get another mouse and if it bothers you to have a different mouse then buy some fish. fish are fun.

I hate mice period. If you dig a big enough hole and put your little mouse in it nothing should bother her. Make sure it is deep though. Like at least a foot deep.
