I need to know what is an access point because I have a Linksys Access Point (Model WAP11 Version 2.2) and I need to know what is an access point.

Before you answer, can you not explain it with a professional way. Say it like a high school student would say because I am only a freshman.

A wireless access point is a device for connecting one or more machines to an existing network. Thus it gives them access. This is useful to add wireless to a wired network.

An access point is an "industrial strength" wireless router. It serves the same purpose and can be used as a router. When it is used to link together parts of a single network, it is called an access point. When it is used to link that network to the Internet, it is called a router.
