(Maybe 'filthy' is sufficient in itself, as it means 'dirty' in the context. Hence you could think of deleting 'and dirty'.)
3. He then realized why he was now outside, far from that haunted church.

Then he reasoned: why is he now outside, far from that haunted church?
(Depends on the meaning you intend to convey, and whether you need an affirmative or interrogative sentence.)
