Why do I read everywhere how bad the effect of immigrants is on our country (UK)? Having travelled to some of the worlds poorest countries, and seen for myself what these guys are running away from, I have no problem whatsoever. Every day we are clean and fed and looked after by services, something that many of these people would never have. I am happy for some of my taxes to go towards helping people in need. After all I am sitting in my heated office at my computer with a cup of tea. And no war on my doorstep, so who am I to complain?

I think it is our society dancing around them that causes racism. They never complain about our Christian values but it seems as though people in power are too afraid of offending them, therefore changing things like Christmas to 'Winterval' just encouraging problems. The majority of them don't care at all.

Also please don't forget there are many British people sponging off the dole etc too, who are worse as they have been privilaged from birth.

For those of u who condemn immigrants, please recall the history of British invasion in these very countries, the impact it had on its people, the economy, social changes, immigrants been brought in for labour who lived in slave like conditions, playing off one ethnic group against the other, etc, etc., etc., and the long term consequences of its rule.

I have to agree & disagree with your answer. I think its unfair the conditions of some of the poor countries, those in war etc however if the government were to allow immigrants then ther country would be overun and the taxes can not support all those people. However if the country is able to look after itself then it can provide allsorts of aid to other countries, as indeed it does. I am undecided, at the end of the day if you were given the choice to open the flood gates so the country ends up in a mess, companies stop investing in the UK, in years to come we could be like a 3rd world country. Now would you give up your heated office & cup of tea? You are right there are lots of British people sponging of the government and that should be fixed, how can the UK help others properly if it can't sort its own problems. I feel sorry for immigrants but the UK has enough of its own problems and we are a tiny tiny island in the world why should we shoulder the burden when the larger more affluent countries dont such as the USA, Austrialia, Dubai etc

Well the main problem is that they want to work! That's not integration is it?
Lots of us don't work, why should we , we get about the same money from benefits!
A lot of immigrants feel guilty about not working, they teach their kids that they should work for a living, we are trying to bring our (many) kids up to learn the pro's and cons of claiming from the state.
Right that's got that off my chest!
Now I am with you 100%!
The UK is now a multi racial multi cultural little island, it can be discussed as much as any one wants, but it's now a fact of life, and the BNP and all the other fascist nuts can do their best, they have no chance!
I, like yourself have no problem paying taxes to help those less fortunate than myself, I feel comfortable and safe here in the UK, compared to the suffering in some parts of the world.
Not many UK folk even know why we have so many Indians here, they earned the right to be here, let them look into it!!! The Gurkha's in my mind also earned the right , they are not all getting it .
But lets not get into all that, your principals are correct , just try and ignore the right wing opinions you have been getting.
Intergration ???? British way of life???? What a load of twaddle if all Nations lived by our way of life what a bloody mess the world would be in. I think one of the 'principles' was to "send out a gun boat to quell the restive natives"? Those days have long gone.
Just one more short point on this subject of intergration, I have a couple of Daughters living in different parts of Spain, they both have kids, they have all 'intergrated' to certain extent, but they are basically Brits, except for the kids they are still part Brit but mainly Spanish now, they are still taught about their 'heritage' and speak both langauges , as they should to my mind.
I visit often I have no wish to intergrate, I am one of the 'old school ' I think all Nations should speak English!! How stupid is that?
The immigrants coming into the UK will be the same, the kids or even their kids will fully intergrate soon, the parents will remember where they originated from and have a great deal of respect for their previous heritage.
Long live intergration and multi everything!!!
The only thing I can see stopping it all is religion. We can never have a multi religion so it must all go!

"Also please don't forget there are many British people sponging off the dole etc too, who are worse as they have been privilaged from birth."

I absolutely agree with you - it's amazing how many people say - but that's ok f you are born here. Many of the Brits I know who sponge do so over generations and generations; if mum had you at 16 and never had a job, neither will daughter or son when they grow up. The cycle just repeats, and even though they are born and bred here, they have never contibuted to the system.

I also find it hugely naieve that so many people think that Immigrants come to England to sponge - the best thing about England is that it is largely safe and democratic. In terms of benefits though; who exactly would put up with the lonliness and crap asylum seekers and immigrants do, for £40 odd quid a week and a crappy council house in a rough area? Really, that deal is not that great.

Most of the people who come here will do so to work, will pay taxes if they can, and they will do the 12 hour days that British workers won't (Like office workers who work 7 hours a day, take numerous *** breaks and spend most of the day stuffing envelopes and surfing the net and still complain that they are "underpaid" and "overworked").

One more thing - of the immigrants I know, their children have in one generation turned out to be doctors, lawyers, business owners; at worst an accountant. The white kids I grew up with have at worst got 4 kids by 3 different men, and at best is a senior sales Manager at a bank. If an immigrant has the change to do better and achieve something with opportunites he/she is given, he/she will. Brits of course, are privelliged from birth - so what's the incentive to do better?

So I'm not alone. I think you're absolutely right. There are two sides to this:
One, we should help people in need because we have the ability to do so. Also controlled immigration is very good for this country especially as we have a declining population.
Secondly, we do need to integrate people into our society and whilst being tolerant of others views/ideologies it should not make us change the fabric of our society - ie changing nursery ryhmes (baa baa black sheep becomes purple sheep), renaming holidays/festivals to not offend people with differing views etc.
A balanced approach is what is needed.
I do think that you are probably going to get a lot of stick for this though because unfortunately there appears to be a lot of narrow minded people on these boards who just can not get past their sun/daily mail based views.
I love the usual rant that they are taking our jobs!
Since when? You mean these people from the eastern bloc who are talented and qualified and will work really hard to get a job done properly in as short a time as possible so that they don't inconvenience you, oh and at reasonable cost.
I wish british tradesmen were like this. If they were they wouldn't be complaining so loudly about losing work! When a plumber asks for £50 just to come look at a problem.......they wonder why they're losing work to newcomers!
Anyway, sick to the teeth of right wing rants from those who can't read anything more adult than the sun and who fail to understand that without immigration the country will surely die.

I dont see where illegal immigrants are helping Americans that is a LULAC lie. Lets state the facts: 1) Illegal immigrants put in about 7 billion a year in the economy they take out 57 billion a year in the economy. 2) Illegal immigrants reduce wages when they take jobs that are lower than the minimum wage with no health benefits all legal immigrants and Americans suffer becuase we pick up your health bill as illegals do not see doctors only emergency rooms. 3) Mexicans are the only people that have caused the U.S. school systems to teach bi lingual education. People from France, Italy, Poland, Germany, Korea, India and other countries learn how to speak English and paid from their own pockets to take English classes. These groups of immigrants did not demand a free ride. When is the last time you made a phone call in the US and it stated press one for French or Korean? 4) America is the strongest country in the world what makes you think we need illegal mexican immigrants or any illegal immigrants? It is the only country in the world where people die trying to get here 5) Most illegal mexicans refuse to speak English and behave as Americans owe them something for being here and fly the Mexican flag. 6) Every Mexican Neighboorhood and business lately have only Spanish signs and look like little Mexico. Koreans, Chinese and other ethnic and national groups business signs are in English/ In other words mexicans refuse to assilimate, All other immigrants assilimated. 7) The marches of 2006 just stated that you are an agorant bunch of people who believe American needs you instead of being humble to be here. You went so far as to wave your mexican flags in America... which stated I am a Mexican and I can do what I want. 8) Mexicans song the National Anthem in Spanish that was a direct insult to all Americans. Americans are a proud and illegal mexicans have gone to far you can only push Americans so far you are aware of IRAQ arent you? There is no amensty and the free ride is over. Yes you are invading America when you come into a country unwanted and illegal . Some illegal mexicans cross the border with drugs, gangs and about to give birth so a child can become a citizen and get welfare that does not make a good citizen? This is not racists, it is a people (the American people) defending the American culture and values when it has been attacked by illegal immigrants invading the American culture and it soils Now lets review the Mexican immigration laws? And we are getting on your nerves? um ...

Those people who suffer over the question of immigrants and immigration are suffering because they fear their way of life will be smothered if immigration is allowed to continue unchecked.

Immigration is not continuing 'unchecked' and never has been. Getting to Britain is extremely difficult - we're living on and island, so that anyone who wishes to come to UK has first got to get across the English Channel. Most of these illegals are stuck in France. They're not coming here any time soon, that's a promise.

Let's just look at immigration into the Island of Britain over the last few thousand years.

So far, according to the DNA study [ongoing] being conducted by the University of Oxford, the oldest established people in UK are the Cornish and Welsh, whos ancestory in UK goes back about ten thousand years. These people are the Celts.

Immigration has not made a jot of difference to them and their way of life; not so that you'd notice anyway.

Where immigration does have an effect is only in major towns and cities where such people settle, especially when they either fail to integrate or are rejected and set aside by the established communities already there.

It so happens that the most vociferous group opposed to immigration are second generation sons and daughters whos parents arrived in UK as immigrants.

As a member of the Welsh race - a Brythonic Celt and therefore descended from the original settlers of ten thousand years ago, I have no fear what so ever of immigration or immigrants.

I live in London which is full of people from everywhere else - including myself. I should be in Wales or at least as far west as it's possible to go in UK.

Immigrants have done extremely well here in UK and they add rather than subtract from the general culture[s] of our island.

Remember, the more people we have working, the more people we have paying tax, the more we can help socially through the welfare system.

The hardest workers are those from Eastern Europe. I know, I have worked with them, mostly Poles. They think the working day lasts about 12 hours with a half hour break at the six hour point. Mad or what? Most of them also send half their salaries back home to their mothers. Do the Brits do that? Not on your life. It's off down the pub in most cases.

Most people in the UK don't have a problem with immigration providing it isn't done at the expense of the welfare of the country. What causes great upset is the "open door policy" on immigration, as the country simply cannot cope with an unlimited amount of people coming in.

You are right in that there are some unfortunate people elsewhere in the world - however, we can't look after them all. For those who think I'm being harsh - Would you be willing to accomodate these people in your own homes if the state didn't have anywhere else to put them? Oh, and you can't pick and choose who you accomodate.

As long as we can all live together we can live together we will be fine. It is easy living in the UK to get to caught up in the whole money money money attitude and forget about the things that really matter in life, such as good health, family and providing for children, family and the less well off.

The UK is doing fine, things can always be better and it is working towards that that is important. Being good human beings is what matters and that means looking after one another no matter what race/religion etc.

Whoever said we are the laughing stock of Europe should go to the Canary Islands and watch the dead bodies of those that died trying to cross over wash up on the beach. They would maybe then ask why anyone would risk everything for such a precarious and perilous journey. Maybe the system could be better but the ethics behind providing asylum (for immigrants legal or otherwise) is compelling.

Many/most legal immigrants are well educated and most if not all make us better off...not worse and immigrants does refer to any non natural entering the UK to make a home so I guess we are talking about a small % and not those that are necessarily legal but not forced or conned into entering by gangs.

The fact is, the Uk has a lack of skilled labourers, so immigration is needed for the country's economical progress, assuming these migrants are hard working (and supposedly many of them are). When questioning a Labour MP/minister about immigration at my sixth form centre, she explained that Britain would not allow immigrants into the country if we had no need for them. Obviously she would say that, despite immigration having it's bad points it's much more beneficial to the UK in the long term. Besides, this is a multi-cultural world we live in so the sooner we all get used to the idea, the better.

Theres nothing wrong with immigration. A good flow of people into and out of the country is a very good thing. However the government needs to take responsibility for it. They need to ensure that border controls are in place to ensure that the people entering the country are either genuine asylum seekers or have the skills which are in short supply in this country. They also need to ensure that our freely available benefit system is not the reason why people are desperate to reach this country.
I dont understand why people fleeing from some despotic regime travel half way across the globe and europe via many other free western countries in order to get to the UK. If escape from tyranny is what they are doing then why not seek shelter in the first free country they pass through.
