By adding the article 'the', unity that is being referred to becomes more specific and identified..... otherwise unity in general is in consideration.

'State of unity' is order as opposition to chaos. 'State of the unity' supposes identity for that 'unity'.

"state of unity" having no identifiers is completely ambiguous. definition in English is too subtle, but being that way it allows for delicate nuance it's an artistic language.

The definition of 'state of unity' would be implied in direct text in the sentence. For example: "The characteristics of unity are indentifiable in every state of unity." ; " we cannot live in peace and harmony without a state of unity"

State of the unity" has an identifier in "the", hence it will refer to a specific and identified 'unity' within the context.
for example: "Florida, is typical of the current state of the unity of the arts"

additional:
I see a question behind this is -
Is a state of unity in the order which the united are in unity or is The state of unity characteristic, not ordered? (or how can it be both?)

It is both thus- A state of unity is characteristic of unity, so Lets call those states of unity for the sake of disambiguation "expressions" of _The_ state of unity.

These expressions are in order over degrees of unity. This order is parameterised. There is order within parameters, parameters are unified by characteristic.

Appearance of 'banana' is yellow and long, order of appearance 'banana' is degrees of yellow and long, this order is parameterised over degrees of banana.
Banana's appearance is form, colour and dimension are parameters of form, form is a state of unity (expression), parameters of form are characteristics of unity which are uniting form between appearance of banana and appearance of ball. To wit - order of appearance of 'ball' is degrees of colour and dimension.

Order of form is parameterised over degrees of form, characteristics unite diversified states of unity (expressions) such as form and feeling. The order is not the same in the new parameter, long feeling and long banana are not in the same place in each respective order spectrum of banana and feeling. But they are unified by the characteristic of unity which gives both a banana and feeling "dimension".

Thus every expression of unity is in order over degrees of unity, and hypothetically the state of unity is characteristic, because this "every expression is characteristic in unity with another expression in unity" is indifferent to greatest contrast possible in perceptible unity. Our "best guess" for 'the order in which the united are in unity' is that it is characteristic.
