I know this would invalidate my already expired warranty, and I've already sourced a part on ebay.

thanks!

I have had a couple of different Dell Inspiron laptops, which have been very reliable. I am a software engineer (programmer) and so I need a reliable laptop with which to do my job. I don't have any real experience with Vista, so I can't really comment there. It looks like the accessories (ram, hard drive, etc.) offered are quite adequate, in fact somewhat better than the current Inspiron that I have.

I'm a DELL user myself.

Buy your optic drive from DELL. It comes with a warranty.
Does the one you've sourced on e-Bay??

DELL will pick up again if faulty.
Where do you send the e-Bay purchase in case of non functionality??

Back to the point. You've got DELL, stay DELL. It'll save you a lot of aggravation.

Yes...optical drives are easy to replace...if you look at the bottom of the laptop...you will see a release button for the drive..just press and push and the release will let you take the optical drive out and replace it!

Really easy to do, just make sure you use a pen and a peice of paper to map out where all the screws (they will be different sizes) have come from and where everything plugs in.

If the eBay drive fits your PC, go for it.
