They used to have black and white stripes but they swapped with the zebras as it was a more flattering pattern on their body shape, it made the elephants look overly pudgy as stripes don't do anything for larger figures...! ;-) They can sometimes be red too if they feel like a change, they just roll around in the muck, the African ones that is!

I really dont know, but they have tough, leathery skins, which are due to their climate and adaptability. But God picked varying colours for each animal, and so only God can truely answer this question!
